I hope you guys can help me.... sorry in advance about the long post...
I've got a 95 240sx with an s13 redtop motor. This is the second s13 motor that has been in the car as the first one took a dump. Cylinder #1 has basically no compression so essentially i have been told i have 2 choices...
1. buy another longblock and swap them out and hope the motor doesn't blow up again
2. rebuild the existing block, preferably use better parts, and make the motor stronger.
Here's the issue, i have not done any of the work on the car myself, and i am not as enginge saavy as i would like to be.. I have contacted 3 SR20DET "specialist" shops and here's what i came up with... None of them can obtain just a longblock and they suggest i buy one on ebay and they will do the work for me total cost would run about $2,000 including the motor (i've found them available for about $900-1200, but i REALLY don't trust buying one from ebay.
As far as the rebuild goes, the cheapest price i got was about $4,000. I don't want to put that kind of money into this car because i have already spent well over $12,000 worth of repair and parts on this car in the past 3-4 years with all the issues i have had.
Every shop i talk to keeps saying i should pull the motor myself and that would save me a bunch of money..
I guess my question is... How hard is it really to pull the motor and do the rebuild myself? Does anyone know of step by step instructions on pulling the motor and a rebuild?
The car has been sitting in my driveway for just over a year now, and i'd really like to get it running again. It is so much fun to drive! I don't mind spending about $2,000 to get it fixed, but that's my absolute limit.
i REALLY appreciate any help i can get
