I need to replace my starter. My QX died last night and I'm trying to repair it before my son's birthday party. I can see the starter but do I need to remove other parts before I can get it out. It looks to be surrounded by other parts without much wiggle room. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The FSM doesn't list any steps, just shows an exploded parts view with the starter and the two bolts that secure it. What seems to be in the way?

The starter is just above the front axle. I finally have the starter out(ish). Removing the starter would be much easier if the car were on a lift. Removing it while on the ground is a challenge. There are only a few inches of wiggle room to move this thing out. I still have to figure out how to remove the connector, I can't turn the starter to see how it's connected. This is possible as a DIY project but the way they have it wedged in place makes it a hassle.

Ah, I have a 2WD so the starter is (should be) very easy to access. Check EL-5 for a list of harness connector types; if you can see the harness connector to determine its type, it might help you in its removal.

Ok, the 4wd is a bear to do but it's done. The two connectors are removed by feel only. You can barely see what you have to do. It is removed by the two bolts and some serious wiggling. The new starter is slightly smaller that the original which made it easier to install. 6 hours later, it starts. In case anyone wants to know this was done because I had the no start, single click issue.

Thanks for the information!

I'm having a similar problem. I can get all of the bolts off and I can get the starter free, but I can't seem to wiggle it past the axle. Any tips on how to pull the start out?

Thanks!
