i've got a question for you. i had my codes read because the check engine light came on and it showed codes for the knock sensor and the idle air control. i replaced the ks and whadya know, the check engine light is still on! i hooked it up again and got the same codes on the readout. then i was told by a nissan mechanic that the knock sensor doesn't cause the check engine light to come on. so i'm thinking that i replaced the knock sensor for no apparent reason. is there any way that i can find out the true problem without taking it to a dealer and paying $70 for a diagnostic?

The mechanic is correct. A bad knock sensor will not turn on the CEL, but it will store a code.

You can always just check the codes yourself with a screw driver. Directions can be found in the FAQ thread at the top of the forum.
