Allright, I bought my dayly driver with an SR allready swapped into it. It was cheap and ****ty in some areas. Ive done ALOT to it, suspension, interior, rewired engine components, ect.

Lately ive been getting some smoke on down shifts, in vac. Leading me to believe its valve seals.

So. Ive decided. What the hell, pull the motor appart and refresh it.

Im not looking to build some track monster or anything insane. I just want it to run smooth and relyable.

I had some ideas but since Ive never done this before I figured id ask the experts.Hopefully you guys can help me in the right direction.

oh, and I guess heres some generic questions that are kinda going through my head right now.

- I want to use stock pistons and rods, what should I do with them? Clean them? Have a shop do something to them???? idk

- Same with the valvetrain, what should I do with it? Clean it? once again, idk.

- I would assume one of the better things to do would be to get new bearings for EVERYTHING right?

- New piston rings, compression and oil?

- Obviously new gaskets.

Im not looking to spend alot cause I have another S13 that im kinda trying to build up. It will be the one thats all out eventually.

thanks

If you're not wanting to make anything that puts out a ton of power, just rebuild back to stock. Since you're pulling the head off, go ahead and disassemble the bottom end and put in new bearings and piston rings while you're at it.

You can clean the pistons and rods yourself. A small can of cold carb dip will clean off 90% of the carbon buildup on them. Also, use an old piston ring that's been cut in half (or broken in half) to scrape the ringlands clean.

If you're doing the headwork yourself, you should know the best way to clean the head up. If you're having a shop do it, let them clean it up. It's why you're paying them.

Allright. Yeah im gonna be doing all the work myself I guess. Ive never done this before so really it should be fun.

I do everything else myself and finally I get to do some motor work! yay.

Im hopefully gonna be picking up a stock head and Ill tear that one appart so I can continue to keep my car in 1 piece.
