A little background on the problem..Originally rough idle- eventually stopped running.. Bad alternator..Anyway- we replaced the alternator with a factory rebuilt amp one, and I have an Optima Yellow top..Drove around for 30 miles or so, no problem.Hooked up my 500x4 Phoenix Gold amp, powering my four 6 1/2"s, had it at medium range volume for 20 miles or so.. The last 10 miles of driving it was up relatively loud.. Then the head unit cuts off- starts blinking like it did before when the alternator was shot- the airbag light starts flashing like it did before when the alternator was shot.. Continues driving for about 5more minutes okay.Stop for about 10seconds- idles rough around 500-700rpms- drive about 3 more minutes.. really bad idle, 400-600rpms..Make it about 1 more mile, pull into gas station- still really, really rough idle-Pull out, and the thing cannot get above 2000ish rpms. RPMS are not constant at all.. and maybe 500ft later, it's dead at a stoplight.Get a jump- drives fine for another 1500ft, dies at another stoplight. Right now it's at a shop in Chapel Hill- supposed to be inspected tomm. morning. Also- my check engine light is on for most likely the MAFS. Would that affect what happened? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am not a pro but from what i have run into, alot of times when an alternator is shot the battery needs to be replaced b/c of draining. But if not, I would take a volt meter, check the battery, it should be round' 12, then turn the car on. check it again, it should be 14. (Cleaning the battery post and the clamps is always good.) If those check you then check grounds. Make sure all three connections on the alternator are tight and the washers or area's of contact for the metal are not corroded. Then make sure the battery itself is well grounded on the body and motor just incase. If all checks out then I wish you the best of luck. Let us know what the problem is.

Man...they should like, have engine specific forums...Then you could post this in a 'KA' type of forum...and other people could make posts in 'SR' and 'CA' type forums...that would make it flow much better...

Oh wait...

that would definately be an option he could have posted this inthe ka section, but as yousee, his problem is not engine specific...its a power problem that could happen to any car...so before you go and criticise his choice inforums you might wanna read the da$M post. hell you might even be able to help... dont be an a$$ when its not necessary..

as for your problem either the battery wont hold a charge, but that shouldnt be the problem if the car is running...right??? or am i being retarded right now..."probably"

Definately do all those things and be sure to test your ground. Try wiggling the mafs around and see if that helps. It really sounds like a mafs problem or ecu to me, but it could just be the battery. Normally after an altenator goes, the battery comes right after since a drain like that is so hard on it. So my guess is ground, ecu, battery, or mafs, and maybe the o2 sensor. So i wish you the best of luck and keep us posted on how the problem goes.

you know, who cares where he posted. this is the 240sx and silvia forum. he has a 240sx and his problem is in his 240sx, so the section listed is appropriate. If your not gonna try to read his post and help him out, just don't say anything. we are here to try and help, not criticize

dont try to be a post whore like me

anyway on to help

def could be a bag ground or battery terminal, however that should HAVE NO affect on the car while its running.

sounds to be if the car runs thens bogs/dies then to me its something with the air/fuel system

possible clog in a line somewhere....electrical just doesnt seem like a feasable solution when the car is running

Make sure your alternator is working correctly. I know you just installed it but it is worth checking for sure.

If it is working correctly then there is no reason why it would be electrical. The alternator would have and should keep the car running even if the battery goes dead.

and no, I am not a mechanic, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night!

As it turns out- the connector in the back of the alternator came out. One hour of shop time + $68 later, the plug is back in, and my car is up and running beautifully. Now I just need to replace my MAFS and my leaky exhaust and I'll be golden. Thanks for everyone that helped me out with this endeavour. Also, I have a feeling the MAFS had something to do with it acting up too, and I should be getting my 'new' S14 MAFS today or tommorow. ($23 shipped )
