I have a 95 S14 with super high mileage and I know it has some problems because of that but I'm poor and can't swap in a newer lower mileage KA to build on. Here's my problem, I have a leaking valve cover gasket that I plan to replace hopefully this week when it supposed to warm up a little. I don't know if I'm leaking anywhere else yet, haven't had the chance to get a really close look at the rest of the engine block, it's been too cold to take it to the car wash and hose down the block with degreaser and clean it yet. Here's my problem, I've noticed that under hard acceleration from a standing start, I get good acceleration and all which is good (I don't do this very often). Afterwards, for the first couple of seconds when I press the gas theres a couple big plumes of smoke. It's white, not black if that makes any sense to you guys. Would this smoke problem go away after I replace the valve cover gasket, or is there a more serious problem that I need to be alerted to. The rest of the time it doesnt smoke at all, not even when on the highway or any other time, only for the first couple of seconds after I shirp the tires a little from a standing stop (ie red lights and stop signs). Any help you guys could give me would be great, please don't just say swap your engine or rebuild your block, I'm poor and can't do that just yet, I can only do minor repair jobs. I should also mention, I do have a tiny coolant leak behind the radiator (possible lower hose leak). Thats all the info I have right now.

God I hope not, I really don't have the money or equipment to rip my engine apart and do a full on overhaul.

Why don't you get a cheap compression tester from Autozone or Pep Boys? See how your compression looks and perhaps you can pinpoint exactly what the problem is.

If its bad rings and you don't have the $$$ for a fresh engine or a rebuild, you could always try something like a heavier weight Castrol GTX High Mileage oil. I suppose it couldn't hurt.

But really, if the rings are bad I'd just let it go as long as driveability is OK and save up money for a new engine or a rebuild down the road.

White smoke = coolantBluish white smoke = oil, or oil & coolantBlack smoke = fuel, or oil & fuel

its probaly not the rings becuase u say it doesnt do it all the time. and also when ur rings are worn, ur engine will burn oil (blueish smoke). if ur engine is burning only white smoke it could be a headgasket. check ur oil to see it has a milky color to it.

Make sure that you are not overfilling on oil. Do the compression test as suggested as well. You can try some smoke-b-gone to see if the smoke calms down to narrow the problem to valve seals if the compression test was ok. It is a temporary fix though. When you drop the oil, check to see if it is chocolatey...

If the smoe is exiting the tail pipe the way you described, there is a sure bet it is either blow by or valve seals gone bad.

As I stated initiately I my valve cover gasket is shot, leaks pretty much all the way around, I don't know about the head gasket, its been to cold still to do a full on degrease and hose down of the engine bay to see if I have any other oil leaks. I'm hoping that once I replace thae valve cover gasket that I don't have any more oil leaks. The only time is does happen is after hard accelaration and even then its only for a few seconds, other than that it doesn't smoke at all.
