The other day coming home I noticed my truck had a slight tick to it. By the time I got home aprox 2 miles it was louder and sounded like metal. Almost sounded like rod knock. So sitting it in driveway my neighbor was like damn that's loud. I revved it up and it went faster and faster. Cut off the truck and cranked it back up same thing. SO I was like F*ck it im going to blow it up. Took it down the street floored it, got back home and it's now quiet. Drives normal no odd sounds. When I floored it , it almost sounded as if something metal was bouncing around in the top half of the motor then it all just stopped. Any ideas about this?

Only thing I did recently to the truck was put in Mobil 1 5w30, it's a 04 and just hit 100k miles

Check your oil dipstick for metal particles. Oil pressure light didn't come on?

That could have been a power valve screw coming loose and getting sucked in the engine and it passed when you floored it. If you've got a few hours to spare I would check your power valve screws - there's a how-to here.

Light never came on. I might have to tear into that this weekend. It just freaked me out.

No SES light, either? Verify the oil pressure light illuminates when you turn the ignition to "ON" with the parking brake set.

If you plan on taking a look at the power valve screws, make sure you get the first three gaskets listed in that thread:
16175-4w000 (throttle body)
14033-4w000 (right side, between upper and lower intake plenum also called 14010A*)
14033-4w010 (left side, between upper and lower intake plenum also called 14010AA*)
I went without the last gasket since I don't plan on removing the lower intake manifold collector. Just be careful to not drop a screw down one of the valves (though I've read that the valves have a fair amount of resistance so they shouldn't move without some force applied; can't verify yet as I haven't done this job yet). I suggest using some red (permanent, high-temp) threadlocker as there's no reason for the screws to ever come out again for maintenance.

At 100k mileage, swap out your spark plugs while you're this far down. The change interval is 105k. That is, unless you see one or more screws missing - in that case you need to decide what to do about it, as you may have engine damage.

Sounds like a possible power valve or screw passing thru and getting chewed up.

You definetely do not have to buy those 3 gaskets, OEM nissan are nice metal gaskets and are in perfect shape still when you pull them off. Ive done 2 vehicles now (my qx4 and a pathfinder) and neither needed any gaskets. Only way they will get damaged / warped / crushed is if YOU ding them while there off the car.

You cant loose any screws down the valves either unless you pry the butterflys open, it takes a good bit of force to spin them open (I openned them with a wood handle to clean carbon) so dont worry about that

My Qx4 had a bunch of loose screws, none missing though. And the 02 pathfinder's were all perfectly tight.

If you havent done the power valves yet definetely do them, even if it wasnt the cause/effect of this problem
