Im having some idle issues. i have a 1991 turbo and it is idling high all the time. its at about 1200-1300. i had the throttle bodies and fuel system cleaned because they seemed to be sticking open a bit but it didnt help at all. i dont know too much about these cars, i just bought it a couple months ago. the shop i took it too thinks i need to replace both throttle bodies but nobody here in arkansas knows much about these cars. not too many of them here. im looking for some advice from the Z veterans out there. what do you think my next step should be? help a newbie out!!

You don't need to replace your throttle bodies lol. You could have a vacuum leak, could be a problem with the IACV on the back of the intake manifold, could be a few other things as well. Search for "idle problems 300zx" and read up - you will learn a lot about what it could be.

PS - get ready to start being your own mechanic haha it's not easy to find someone who is willing and knowledgeable about this car.

thanks for the reply..the reason they think its the throttle body is because it sticks open just a little bit and when you push the throttle linkage down the idle goes back to normal but every time you touch the gas it will stick open. haha and ya i didnt know how hard it would be to find someone with knowledge of this car

It sounds like the mechanic may have found a mechanical bind, perhaps something is sticking in the springs. There is a problem that has popped up where the throttle linkage can get stuck on the PCV valve if it backs out slightly. Check the entire linkage and ensure all springs are where they should be, it can't hurt to give them a little lube either.

where is the PCV valve at man? i checked the springs and lubed them up, the look a little worn out so they may have lost some tension that too.

There are a few, they connect to the valve covers which are semi-hidden by the intake plenum. I would also make sure your throttle cable isn't binding, and perhaps try to throw some lube down it. There are kits you can buy to force spray lube into throttle cables.

If it were me, I would remove the throttle cable and check if the butterflies return to their closed position ok. Then you know its the throttle cable sticking, if not you know it is a problem with the throttle bodies.

That is a picture of the pvc valves I am referring too.

Also I would clean the throttle bodies with a toothbrush and throttle body cleaner spray!

If I had to guess, I'd say your throttle cable needs to be cleaned off and lubed up. They get gunky and sticky over time, and the cable might be having trouble sliding back to the closed position. Just un-attach the cable from the throttle bodies, and clean off everything the cable touches and the clean the cable itself. Brake clean on a rag will work great. Then spray the cable and the throttle linkages with silicone spray or another similar lubricant. WD40 isn't really a good lube for this.

hey thanks for all the help guys. i figured it out. the throttle linkage was getting held up by the PCV valves and the cable was also too tight. ten minutes was all it took. thanks for the advice and for saving me about a grand worth of throttle bodies and labor.
