ok so today i picked up a 95 ka24de, i wanna go KA-T, i got the motor as part of a deal (i bought a running 1975 280z for 175$) and well its been sitting out with no valve cover on or timing chain cover so its soaking wet with water on the inside, the guy said since it had oil in it the water shouldn't have rusted any of the bearings or anything in the bottom end. also the main reason he gave it to me is cause the distributor seized while driving and it destroyed PART of the chain. The motor still turns over by hand so i think there was no valve contact and it has 130k miles and when i turn it over by hand its rotates smoothly and has is pretty hard to turn when its on the compression stroke. I know this doesn't mean much but its still a clue to the condition of the bottom end, any way i was just wondering what u guys think, im hopping to only need a s13 intake manifold (its going in my 89 coupe) and maybe a head (and all the stuff to swap it in the coupe) and a new chain and a good cleaning, im looking to boost it to 6-7 psi with stock injectors and MAFS, and a side mount, the guy is extremely honest, now that i think about it he had nothing to loose by not telling me the truth, he sad the motor ran perfect with no misfire or anything like that so i hope it was true

ok so i pulled the head today and found no rust in the cylinders and they all were full of water and oil so i cleaned them up and they are as smooth as can be, pistons had a lot of soft carbon on them and i think its because the spark plugs weren't changed often, i looked at them and the plugs were worn pretty bad, head checks out ok, no bent valves or leaky cylinders. Im gonna barrow a engine stand and check the rod bearings with plastic gauge and if they are good im putting it back together and going KA-T

What turbo are you going with? Are you planning on using a FMU?

well im on a budget so something stock, like a stock SR turbo, my friend has a stock RB25DET turbo that he might give me and a stock inter cooler pipping from a SR along with a side mount, im looking to get 6-8 psi of boost, im mostly after reliability (i know, adding a turbo to a KA is a contradiction of that) but anything is better then my 89 SOHC with 252,225 miles (it is the original motor) head was rebuilt at 220,000 miles and it leaks oil from every possible seal and has a nice knock when its cold and its slow as a turtle, but i still whoops a** on DA integras and i dont know what a FMU is so i cant tell u what im gonna use, i will post pics of my mint 89 coupe with HUD, all power options and a power sunroof with black interior, i got it for 900$

an fmu is short for fuel management unit. you cant run boost without some type of fuel management and this is the simplest kind.

it's just a boost sensitive fuel pressure regulator as boost goes up so does fuel pressure. this means you can run with stock injectors and no real tune.

i'm running one on my setup for now, itll get you boosted on the cheap so yeah GL.

ohh ok that makes sense, thanks for not flaming me and actually explaining it, so i think ive seen one of those, does it hook up to the fuel line and then into the fuel rail?? also i had a lot of soft carbon on the pistons when i pulled the head, what does that mean?

Lovin the old Z

Soft carbon can come from anything, probably an over rich condition caused by a old O2 sensor. If the pistons and what not can be cleaned with some WD40 and a cloth you're good to go. On a side note, spray everything down with WD40 if it's bare metal.

The RB25 turbo should be pretty good for a low boost setup on the KA, it's a ceramic ball bearing type, so it'll last forever and spool very fast. The turbo itself shouldn't be boosted past 14 psi though, the turbine wheel likes to unass itself if you boost it to high.

so i got the shell and we pulled the ka out (btw that was my first time pulling an engine out) and halfway through it realized i didn't have a cherry picker, so i called about 6 of my friends (we all work out everyday) and we strapped some ropes to it and stood on the shock towers and pulled it out by hand (seriously the ka is like a million pounds, i can dead lift like 650 pounds and my friends can do even more and we were struggling) so im gonna start to swap it in tomorrow, i dont have a clue on the condition of the motor (odo says 201,000 miles) spark plugs look pretty good, but for some reason the timing on the distributor looks like it been set to full retard which is weird, i couldn't comp test it cause i don't have and extra starter, so if anybody has a clue and what i could check that could tell me if the motor was running good that would be helpful, ohh and the motor has oil in it and there is no water mixed in their so the HG is good (i hope) and the upper timing tensioner has almost no wear on it, and the car has a new fuel pump in the shell but no gas in the tank so i don't know whats up but im crossing my fingers
