Alright so i just finished up my new setup. Cometic headgasket, arp headstuds, brian crower 264 duration cams, brian crower springs/retainers, fmic, t3/t04E 60 trim top mount setup, nismo 740cc injectors, enthalpy tune. My problem is on first start up over laborday weekend the intake cam gear some how came off the pin, so the cam stopped turning. Everything was installed correctly and torqued to the correct specs, i even have pictures showing that everything was lined up and correctly installed before the valve cover went on. Anyone have any idea of how it could have came off the pin even when torqued down?

Also im pretty shure i bent the valves on cylinder 1 and 4 since it wasnt turning and we cranked it for a while before we realised it. Just would like someone to let me know if there is anything else i should expect to be damaged when i pull the head off in a week or two.

Also it broke one of the little rocker arm guides that sit on top of the valve keepers, any idea of where i can get replacements?

midway or courtesy can get you the shims (the part that sits on top of the keeper)

As far as what caused your problem, it's hard to say since you had an aftermarket cam. Did it snap off? Or did the pin simply back out? Either way, I'd be contacting BC and ask them about what to do. A failure like that is a QC issue on their part. If it somehow just slipped off the pin, then you didn't have it properly aligned when you torqued it down.

Valves will be fun to order, btw. Intake valves are easy to get. Any nissan dealer can order them. The exhaust are specific to RWD motors, so you'll have to find someone who carries them in stock.

Off hand, I can tell you that enjuku, phase2, and JGY all carry exhaust valves.

Thanks for the help... im pretty shure the pin didnt come out or move at all. When we pulled the valvecover off the gear was crooked on the cam and free spinning, yet it was still torqued down. The strange thing is, the exhaust cam was turning even though the intake wasnt. Ill talk to BC and ill take a look at it all again when we reassemble it, for now ill just have to pull the head off and find out how bad it is.

if you found the cam gear sitting crooked on the cam snout, and the bolt was still torqued... you didn't have the gear properly seated prior to bolting it all together. there is no possible way the the locator pin could have backed out of the cam UNLESS the bolt snapped and the washer between the bolt head and cam gear wasn't there. when everything is assembled correclty, the washer covers the pin.

as for the intake cam not turning... you may have indeed broken the camshaft, unless the chain had popped off of the cam sprocket.

take a good look at your pistons prior to reassembling everything. if the valves were bent while you were cranking, then the pistons are probably fine... but if the engine was actually running when the failure occured, you could have damaged those respective pistons.
