Ok so I have a 2008 M35 with 41K miles on it ... recently I turned off the audio when driving from night shift ( was tired of listening to music ) the streets were dead I was the only one on the road at 3 a.m. in my neighborhood. After reading a thread with the "engine knock" engine-knock-08-m35s-t538888.html
I felt like it would be a good idea to listen to my engine on a such quiet night... well after the engine was warmed up , from a full stop I was slightly pressing on the gas pedal but I mean very slightly and I heard this little tapping from about 700 rpm to about 1500 rpm , then the tapping was less heard as the engine was revving higher and the muflers started giving sound... at first I thought I was tired and it was my imagination but the bug was sitting in my head as I am very sensitive to hear any vibration or rattle in the car. Anyways I pulled up on my street where I park and decided to give this some good listening . I then tried the following : Put the car in "P" park while engine running
w/o a/c and - NOTHING-tried with the a/c on - NOTHING - sat in the car put the car in reverse ( I am on a slight hill so to reverse the engine has to work a lilttle harder and only with acceleration) I slightly pressed on gas and I could hear it - the little tapping - . Pulled out of my parking spot and turned around to go up the little hill in Drive , from a full stop slightly pressing on the pedal I could also hear it .... so the conclusion is - it only happens in reverse and drive when very lightly pressing on the pedal , doesnt matter if the A/C is ON or OFF... I would not describe it as knocking its just weird .. deffinetly something recent because I listen to my car... Little while ago I got back from my brother in laws house, I went there to confirm that I am not the only one hearing this.. and he heard it too.. so its not my imagination.

Little more info on my car:
I always put 93 octane gasoline ( Shell V-Power )
Do my oil changes at 3500 miles ( Mobil 1 Full Synthetic )
I dont drag the car or do wild stuff with it I dont baby it either , it gets a little more load every once in a while but nothing crazy.
I am up to date with my maintnance to 41k

I started a new thread because I dont thing I have the same problem as guys from the " ENGINE KNOCK " thread.
ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED AS THIS IS REALLY DRIVING ME CRAZY !!! :frown:

You have the same problem as me and love. I didn't hear anything park, but heard in on very slight acceleration. Take it in and get a new short block like both of us.

I hope I dont ... zerg I went through your thread and you`ve stated that you heard it at 1700rpm on the first gear ?!Was it a single knock or was it knocking ? I dont hear it at 1700 rpm . car idles at 650rpm or so and as soon as I tap one the pedal I hear tapping and it goes away at about 1300 - 1500 rpm or so, after that I dont hear anything. I will take a sound clip tomorrow and post it up.. worst case I will take it in to the dealer on saturday

OK so here it is I just went for a spin to let the engine warm up to a fully operational temperature, and recorded a video with a sound of this tapping... I opened the hood and placed my camcorder on the plastic cover... this tapping only happens in Drive and Reverse, nothing in neutral or park mode . I had to slightly hold my left foot on the brake and accelerate .. I did not go over 1000 rpms in this video... I hope this is not some big issue ,although I have a warranty it still hurts to hear this :(

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO LISTEN TO YOUR ENGINEs EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE !!!

ANYBODY ???!!! I see over 130 views but only three people could chime in, thats kind of dissapointing to find two thirds of members being ignorant . Maybe if this was a topic about 22" rims I would have gotten more help, lol
but anyways there is this thing that keeps those 22 inchers spinning, those exhausts growling . YEEES,its the engine .
Well I am taking her to the dealer in the morning so will see what it is. Btw. I am not trying to be a d*ck but I am sure theres more of us having this issue...

well 130 views prob. means 40 viewers have looked at this multiple times an zero of the 40 are infiniti engine mechanics. Its much easier for people to chime in about an opinion on a set of wheels then to diagnose an engine issue from a 10 second soundbite. For all we can tell its a woodpecker in that tree youre filming. Unfortunately dealership is the best bet and luckily you have a warranty still. Please report back when you find out so you can help others in the future.

Yeah you are probably right... :) the woodpecker was good though LOL :chuckle:

ANyways took the car in today, they heard it and did not try to :bs: me which I was kind of afraid off ... turned out to be a bad belt tensioner bearing rod or something.Mechanic fixed it and it seems to be fine right now , will see .

I am just wondering why you are asking for more opinions when you have 2 people that recently had the the exact same problem telling you what to do.

I just saw the video and your sound is a lot louder than mine was. You need to take you car to the dealer and take care of this ASAP before your warranty runs out. Have them call Riverside Infiniti in CA for advice if they need help with proper diagnosis. They isolated my problem to cylinder #1 through cylinder deactivation test.

I had the same problem with the engine knock. Took it to the dealer ended up being the A/C condenser. They changed it and problem went away.

Well I dont eat bread from only one bakery... so I wanted some more opinions , experiences etc.. I am glad it was what it was (hopefully), the knocking went away after the mechanic replaced the tensioner , pulley and put on new belts. Plus I think the camcorder made it a little more dramatic.

I just listened to your recording. I recently got an M35x, and have an engine knock problem. Or I might call it an engine ping problem. Ping sounds totally different.

Your problem sounds like a "rap" problem, like real baddness in a rod or bearing - or sometimes a belt-driven accessory problem. Badly adjusted rockers usually have a sound with a bit more snap in it, but your recording may not be of high enough fidelity to include that higher pitched noise. But this is NOT the noise I'd associate with "engine knock" or "engine ping" or "pre-ignition".

A sound like yours needs to be diagnosed ASAP. Really unusual for a car this new to have serious engine component issues.

Well, my M45 is doing the same thing. I have a sound bite from the interior, but from the outside it sounds exactly the same. Mechanic says its the tensioner or component issue and not that of the engine internals. We'll see when they try to replace the pulley and stuff.

Hey, yeah my problem was isolated with replacing the belt tensioner but it was frustrating not knowing what it can be... the worst is to read other members inputs saying that "they had the same noise and had to replace half of the engine if not the whole thing" just dont panic take it in and you`ll see what they tell you,.., best is to gather info .. if you are out of warranty don`t let them B/S you...

Well, I lifted up the M and isolated the knocking sound to the lower passenger side and ripped open the lower cover and heard the noise coming from the power steering pump.

Took off all the belts and ran the car again for a few seconds to hear a beautifully sounding VK45 purring peacefully with no misfires, knocks, valve taps, just a silky smooth v8 like new.

Decided to test all the pulleys, tensioner, idler, alternator, water pump, ac compressor, and spun the power steering pump and BINGO!

Got on the horn with local parts place WorldPAC and got one (OEM Reman w/lifetime warranty) and snagged for $281 over-nighted FEDEX along with some Bando belts, they had a unit for $201.00 but it wasn't the OEM unit. Will replace tomorrow afternoon when it comes in. While we were down there we checked the oil pressure using a oil pressure gauge and attaching it to where the oil pressure sensor is and got a read of over 18psi-20 psi idle (98kPA+) idling which is well within limits of factory specs (according to service manual)

I'm very glad its not the bottom end like others have posted, so If anyone starts hearing that annoying knock and congested sound, hopefully its not the bottom end but a pulley or at worst a power steering pump.

All in all this car has treated me well, aside from maintenance items and a broken motor mount (too much hard accel and burnouts :naughty: I think ~don't correct me if i'm wrong) 108,000 miles and the power steering pump is the first thing to be replaced that is NOT on the recommended maintenance schedule!
