ok. so im looking into getting either a convert. or a coupe. heres my dilemma i love the way coupes look and id love the option of rolling around topless. but i don't really dig how the vert looks with the soft top i think it kinda throws off the lines on the car. me and a friend were thinking what it i cut the top off of a coupe and place it on top of the the convert body. i know there would be alot of fab work.. basically im asking how would everyone here on this forum take on a task like this i want opinions basically.. all opinions are welcome!

does the window on the vert have more of a slant than the coupe for aerodynamic reasons?i s there any length differences between them? what do you think i can use to seal it from water? rain stripping?

like i said before all opinions welcome!

WHY!!!!! the Convertible is just that, a coupe with the top cut off. Some verts look weird with the top because the tops are old and need to be tightend. When you put a new top on it and its tightened up right it looks just as good as the Coupe.

VVV Now for the next guy VVVVVVV

I think you'd be better served making a fiber glass mold of a coupe top than trying to fit the Nissan sheet metal. Primarily, you'll need a latching mech for the front and the back. Mazda has hook/anchors on the trunk lid of the Miata/MX-5 to anchor their hard tops down. So if you did something similar, it would be possible. The only major issue doing that would be the fact that mazda designed their anchors to sit on the unibody and shortened the trunk lid a few inches to accomodate that. Our trunk lids go all the way back and there's no room on the unibody to mount anchors.

Also, the rear trim molding presents an issue. It would be in the way and cause odd line/leaking issues. If you're worried about the lines of the vert not being identical to the coupe, the molding would be the reason the lines look so broken. I bet if you took a protractor to the roof lines, you'd find the angles to be almost identical.

compare the difference in the lines between a coupe 350z and a vert 350z. maybe you'll like the 240vert better now!

I agree with making a fiberglass mold [Would free up a lot of weight] Also id say check out some other hardtops like Miatas and get some ideas on latching and sealing and all that... IMO i love the look of verts [Top up and down] and i wouldn't really change it but good luck with it.

I'm pretty sure a hard-top replacement is a wet dream for most of us. A few have tried, but no one has succeeded with a design that both works and looks great. If I had time and resources, I'd love to tackle something like this. However, I'm more concerned with performance over style so I wouldn't spend the time or money for a hard top any time soon.

Don't let us discourage you from trying though! It can be done.

I think you should just get a coupe.

Somebody already attempted it before but didn't succeed. Don't remember who it was but I remember seeing the pics. Not saying you can't accomplish it yourself but I think you should just let it be. Either get a coupe or get a vert. If not, get both. If you want to roll topless I'm not sure why you're so concerned about the way the top looks. The majority of the time it'll be down and out of sight am I right? Just my .02
