Good morning - and thanks in advance for the coaching and patience with my questions as I am a Nissan newbie.

I am researching doing a SR20 family engine swap into this;

Image

This is my 1967 Triumph TR4a and it just ate it's under 100 mile professionally rebuilt engine and I am more than slightly fed up with it. It is going to run me around $4,000 to get it rebuilt and I am thinking that for not wildly different money I could install a SR20-family engine and have a better, more modern, better support engine attached to a proper 5 speed that would be both more powerful and lighter. As you can tell from the picture she is a driver, and my intention is to use her for long distance touring events in/around SoCal. (Side note - this is an original paint SoCal car that sat unloved in Seal Beach for 22 years before I pulled it out of a garage and got it running. I've had a number of these and was banking (no pun intended) on have a British engine specialist rebuilding the engine result in the car being good for 75,000+ miles but no luck).

If I may I have several questions I would like to get your coaching on;

1) Is there a specific SR20 series engine that I should focus on for a normal aspirated engine for a good street car, even a mild tune should give me a 25-40% bump in power?

2) I am decent with a MIG, so am not that worried about fit and clearance issues, but will need some help on wiring. I was hoping to get the engine and transmission fitted and then bring it to a specialist in SoCal, Orange County ideally for the wiring help. Is there a shop that someone could recommend that would be able to help me?

3) What 5 speed transmission would you recommend as a bolt on - I should be OK on clearance.

4) Sourcing the engine - any tips or recommendations? I am aware of Soshin USA and JDM West Coast, but I am sure there are others to consider but as a newbie I am not plugged in on where to look?

Thank you again for the coaching!

Were you able to get the engine in right? I'm sure you'll have to make custom engine and transmission mounts for this swap. Possibly knocking out part of the firewall. Like to see some pics on this cool swap. :yesnod

Good morning - thanks for the note back.

I was able to use the passenger side stock SR20DE engine mount as-is, fabricated a simple mount to use these engine mount bushings.

I got these from FRSport - super people there.

On the drive side I had to modify the mount ti relocate the opening for the engine mount stud but was able to keep the rest of the stock engine mount as-is including using stock bolt pattern.

I am actually welding the custom mounts to the frame today, fingers crossed.

The transmission mount was pretty easy - I got lucky as the stock transmission mount is located where the stock Triumph mount is. All I had to do was fabricate a strong rectangular piece of steel and drill it to fit the stock SR20DE 71c transmission mount and then drill it to match the Triumph bolt holes. I can adjust it up and down via bolt size to get the drive shaft angle right.

The biggest issue so far is the clutch and flywheel set up. The SR20DE apparently has a 225mm clutch set up and all the local parts houses only have 240mm to 250mm set ups. I think I am going to remove the existing flywheel and swap in a matched SR20DET 240mm flywheel and clutch set up to make the parts availability issue easier to deal with going forward. I believe I can use my stock starter as the flywheel surface is bugger but the ring gear for the starter is the same.

I was able to use this header - clears the steering shaft so that does not need to be modified (which is a big win)

2007 Ford Focus (the shame, I know) fits about perfectly. I tried a 240sx radiator first to keep it all in Nissan family but I couldn't get it to fit properly.

^There isn't any shame if it works lol. That's cool the header and downpipe were able to fit with a direct bolt on. Win win situation there. The 240sx radiator is probably too tall for that car. Like to see some pics as you are working on it. Let us know any more updates about fitment. I'm interested as I wanted to do a SR20 swap with a 1969 Porsche some time ago. The body/room is most likely similar. :cool:

Will post some more pictures soon.

SR20DE will be about 150 pounds lighter including transmission, and give me about 50 extra horsepower.
