Need some help - My hood won't open!

Hi, i am sure some of you will "Flame" me or what not but i can't get my hood open. The Car is a 1986 300ZX Turbo not sure if that matters much but anyways here is the problem that i am having. i'm not sure if it is the cable or if it is the actual latch or what it is. But i pull the release and i her the sound and i go and try and open it and it comes up about 5 inches and then it stops but i can't figure out why i tryed hitting it i tryed closing it and reopening i did everything i could think of and i can't figure out how to pop the hood. If anyone has had this problem how did you fix it or if anyone knows how to fix it i would be greatful well thanks in advance - Nick

5 inches? well, that should be more than enough to figure out what's holding it down. try opening your eyes. use a flashlight. might help.

yea i did that and it looks like its stuck on the 2nd latch or someting i was going to try and unbolt the latch part that i can get to and see if that helps anyone else think they know what the problem might be? are these cars known for having a bad latch?

a hood latch failure usually results in a hood flip (i.e. hitting the windshield). If you can pull the release lever, the hood opens about an inch. then you grab the safety latch and pull. there are no other latches. can you take a picture of your problem?
