Ok fellow RBers, I don't post here often because one I don't have a running RB and two I know how to search, but I need your help today. I know this issue has come up so many times but I think my particular case might be different, I already searched the archived topics on Nico, Northwest Nissans as well as google but failed to get any solutions to my questions. So please let me explain and hopefully you guys can help clear things up.

So I have a 96 s14 with a totaled branded title (no body damages anywhere mind you), I want to get a reconstructed title and I have all the documents to do so and make it work, the thing im worried about is the emissions. I know on a 96 or newer they scan OBD to check emissions, so my question is how do i do that with an RB25 swap? They can't just scan an RB...I really dont want to get a KA just to pass emissions....

I appreciate any help...thanks

it depends on your local emissions station really. i've heard that if they can't hook up the scanner, then they can give you a waiver. other places i've heard they fail you

I already searched the Oregon DMV and DOT site and failed to find anything regarding this matter. I wonder if I can just tell them my engine is OBD1 when I rebuilt the car so they can just sniff the tailpipe instead...?

go to an inspection station and ask but be vauge in your questions when it comes to the car specific stuff...they should tell you whats legal and whats not.

Again, that will depend on your local laws and the station itself. Some of the states Im familiar with state that only an engine from the same year as the car or newer may be swapped in.

NO RB OR SR IS OBDII

in black and white, you can NOT legally swap a RB into a 96+ vehicle no matter what year the engine.

OBD2 and a RB is a mother. i hate it. you either have to break the law to register it, swap a KA back in for emissions, live in a non-emissioned state/county, or just take it off the street.

Portland metro area is the only county in Oregon that requires emissions testing. I drove around an RB20 with no muffler, no cat, and probably a little too rich, for a couple years in eugene.

Take from that what you will I guess...

Damn I was hoping those weren't my options...guess im screwed...

unless...I go out and buy a 95 s14, well i won't jump to conclusions yet, ill just go ask the dmv/dot bout the issue....no matter what though im gonna get a rb25 s14....

Kamin is right. the technical answer is no, its not legal, but i think all RB swaps aren't anyway.

For OBD2 cars, it really depends on how much of a stickler to the rules the emissions guy you get is on THAT particular day at THAT particular station. They may try to do a sniff test instead or even give you a waiver. Before you completely give up hope, I'd try to go to an emissions station and ask around. If the answer is still no, try a small bribe

i mightve figured out a solution to my problem after all, my brother goes to school and lives in a county that does not require emissions testing, yay ;-)

quite farfetched, and i know he found a solution, (I dont own a OBD2 Car) but would it be possible to get a OBD module or w/e out of a skyline, and ditch the one based off of a KA? so when they check for the emmisions it would show up based on the Skyline specs?
