So I successfully removed the 2 drive belts on the motor of my wife's 2002 Pathfinder LE, and replaced them with new ones. They are the correct belts, and they are installed correctly, I checked multiple times.
Trouble is, no amount of belt dressing will get them to stop squealing. I have tweaked the tension in both directions and get anything from a constant squeal, to one that only really squeals under load, like when turning (making the ps pump work harder).
I have been trying to do the old "that feels about right" on the tension, as I don't have a tensioner. I am checking at the tension check point as illustrated in the manual, and the only thing I can guess is that I don't have them tight enough. I'm going to try tightening it up a lot more than it is now and then I'm out of ideas. I'm thinking that since there isn't much of a run between the pulleys at the check point, it probably needs to be pretty snug, or am I off here?
I have narrowed the problem down to the larger (front) belt, and it appears to be slipping around the fan pulley, at least at startup (I watched it from underneath while the wife started the car).
Anyone have any ideas? I started this job so I could save the charge of someone else doing it, but it looks like I'm going to have to take it in if I can't figure it out.
