When you say the dealer wants 1800 to fix your compressor, you mean it can be fixed without it being replaced?
If the dealer says the unit can be fixed, there is a good chance he might be leaving the system intact & servicing the compressor in-car.
I would do everything possible to keep it that way too, especially if the system has a good charge in it, and does not leak!
The problem is, if that is the case, the $1800 price tag is high!
Is it a non-engaging clutch problem? Is the unit Seized up? If so, is it the clutch causing the seizure?
You want to be 100% sure the compressor is defective because it involves a few steps before removal & after install
in getting it all repaired safely & working in the end. This requires quite a bit of AC skill sets!
BTW, does the new $400 compressor include the clutch & pulley?
