Post

Hi. I know that this is not the right forum to post but thought vert owners could help me as well.I have a 97 240sx base auto. Car has the check engine light one. It once had it 4-5 weeks ago, then took it to my mechanic, and they told me it was a code related to the transmission. They have reset with the scanner and disappeared and now has the check engine light on.From my point of view, it feels that the transmission is going bad ('cause it feels like it when I drive).Anyways, let's go to the point.I'm planning on selling my car maybe within the next 6 months.I have 3 options:1. auto trans replacement2. auto --> 5 speed swap3. auto --> sr or rb swapWhich one could be a better way to go to? I do not want to pour a bunch of money into the car, and not being able to recover when I had to sell it.So my question is which will get me the most money out of it when I have to sell the car.I have two cars right now: an 2003 acura rsx type s, and this 97 240sx.Any piece of advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you're trying to get the most out of it when you sell stay away from an engine swap.Do you really want a 5spd? If so, swap one in, but if you prefer auto swap in a fresh one or rebuild the one you have.

If you are going to sell the car in 6 months, do nothing. Currently there is no issue with the car other than psychological - i.e. your mechanic told you there was a transmission code & he cleared it, so now you have in the back of your mind that something is wrong w/ the transmission.

Next time you get a CEL, pull codes yourself - obdii scanners can be rented free of charge from autozone, kragen, pep boys, etc; you can also do the traditional ecu way.

Why do any kind of major swapping if you want to sell the car?

Even if you are keeping the car for the long run, unless you want a 5-speed really bad, there is not reason to swap out an entire transmission (and possibly introducing even more issues) when nothing is knowingly wrong.

As the adage goes, "if it ain't broke..."

hmm.. are you sure the transmission is going bad?.. how so? does it take a little longer to shift from 1st gear (wind up and then shift hard?). There is an entire post about the wonderful slushbox transmission. At last read I think it was either the REV sensor that was to blame. Read the post and it tells you how to check (unplug the REV sensor from the harness near battery/fuse block). If the problem changes dramatically you may be able to get a new REV sensor for cheap. Us Vert owners have dealt with this transmission problem a bunch as all Verts started life with the auto. I'm sure there are TONS of auto transmission cluttering up a junk yard somewhere and are cheap enough that you could swap one in and unload the car. 5-speed swap is not that hard and may bring a couple of bucks extra from the SPEED RACER types. I wouldn't rebuild the trans (waste of money). Your call. The resale market for your Acura is probably better right now with gas where it is at. (Acura = good gas mileage = extra money when selling). Use the SEARCH button to find the post and read it. Good Luck.

Thank you guys. I'll start using more the SEARCH button now that you mentioned about a possible faulty rev sensor.
