First, I'm hoping it's just the battery, but hopefully you can tell me. So I go to start my car just a bit ago and it starts, then it dies. I restart it, it starts, the idle drops really low and the rpms drop and it sounds like it's going to die then it goes back up and stays running. I had the battery tested at Advance Auto and they said it was bad so naturally I might just say ok it's bad get a new one, but I just want to be sure that problem probably isn't something else. I hope it's just the stupid battery cause then it would be my stupid fault for last weekend.

Second question, what kind of batteries do you guys use? What's a good one? Should I consider something with more cold cranking amps since I am moving to Germany?

1st yes if the battery is bad than you have to change it or fix it. I'd change it. Repairing the cells are not that great. You repair one 2 weeks later other cell gives up. I had that before. Only 2 months instead of 2 weeks. Can't be sure that is your only problem. But need to be fixed anyways.

2nd It is hard to keep up with the new products. Your best bet if you ask help in the store which one to buy. I'd go with any premium battery.

Replace the battery! They can cause strange problems. I would recommend Optima batteries, the red top if you don't plan on getting a stereo system (yellow if you do). However, they will not go in easy. You have to modify the positive terminal, and extend the negative one. When I did my stereo install, they just used a 4 ga wire instead of the stock wire for the negative. Then, a neg battery terminal.

For the positive, its a little more tricky. The G35 has a plastic fuse block that you'll have to deal with. I think you can get it on by bending it a bit. (For mine, since I have a fuse block for the stereo, they had to extend the positive lead going to the starter).

You might be able to avoid this by getting a JDM, or European style Optima battery-basically the terminals are switched and near the edges of the housing. If Autozone or Advance doesn't have it, check the local stereo shops. Make sure the battery has a cover as you'll need this for the install!!

If you go Optima, you'll never need to worry about it again!

PICS!

Yes, the cover will fit!!

So I really want to cry right now... I just got the battery replaced and it still is doing that when it starts. When I start the car, the engine revs to life like normal, then the rpms drop and it seems like it shudders a little bit as if it wants to just die, then the rpms pick back up and it idles normally. So it seems as though it is something else. Any ideas or suggestions? I really love this car and it just sucks to think that something might be wrong with it.

yeah, definitely sounds like something in the cylinders. Check spark plugs, valves, and make sure no excessive moisture or water is in them. Also check oil, G's eat it up like crazy

I know Infiniti Dealers are not cheap, but they have the diagnostic equipment to obtain all the fault codes out of the ECU & tell you what is wrong. If that was the original Battery, I wouldn't sweat replacing it but why d!ck around just guessing and replacing parts? Let the dealer tell you what is wrong? If you plan on keeping the vehicle for awhile, it may pay to purchase the Shop Manual?I always purchase one for every vehicle that I buy. I found the $300 purchase price for mine has already saved me more than that. Just my opinion! Good Luck

$300 for a Shop manual?! Wow, that's a lot'. That's not like the same thing as a Haynes Auto Manual is it? And I wasn't just "d!ck around" when I replaced the battery, it was testing bad at Auto Zone and Advance Auto so it was going to need a replacement regardless. Also, I just got it back from the dealer(I took the pop charger off of course) and they said, "it just hasn't adjusted to my exhaust yet" and claim that they adjusted the idle a bit. Some interesting new developments however are that: A) after I replaced the stock intake and started it, for some odd reason, it was idling REALLY badly and would NOT go above 2500 RPMs with the pedal to the floor. IMMEDIATELY after reseting my ECU however, it started up and revved to life like normal. B) Driving it around before I took it in to the dealer, it started and drove like normal. So now I wonder, was it maybe just acting weird with the pop charger on there? I'm going to reinstall it and reset the ECU and see if that helps me at all.

I don't recommend the red tops at all. They are starting batteries so they are not designed to handle discharges well. I've gone through 3 red tops in one car before I switched to a blue top. that particular battery lasted me through the rest of that cars life (A couple of years) and 4 more years in another car including several near full discharges. I installed one now in the Titan a few months ago.

Starting batteries in general have more CCA's for a given size, but deep cycle batteries like the blue and yellow top optimas can handle discharges, recover completely and charge faster. Discharging a starting battery will diminish capacity depending on how much you discharge it by and how many times. Deep cycles tend to have a bit less CCA's, but should be strong enough to handle general starting applications just fine.

Blue and Yellow top optimas are the same for their respective sizes(both are deep cycle), only blue tops have marine terminals. The marine terminals are actually a nice feature as you can use it to wire an amp directly to it without splicing into the factory wiring. Though the G35 does have an extra stud that you can tie into on the terminal block as well.

Yes the paper version is just over $300. There is a CD available also but I prefer the paper version. It is four thick volumes probably over 1000 pages of documentation on the G35 & also includes wiring diagrams as well as all the connectors. It describes in detail on how to repair or remove/replace everything on the vehicle. Much more detailed than Haynes. In my opinion, well worth the money. I've already saved more than the purchase price on work I've done myself rather than pay Infiniti over $100 per hour.
