need opinions on rb20det tunning

Ok so im a little confused/stuck on what i should do for tunning my rb20det im going for a high HP build and been looking into several diff options on tunning. but i guess im looking for opinions on what ecu/program or what i should use. i heard good things about nistune but i have also heard that i can tune my stock ecu. i would like to stick with the stock ecu because of the knock maps that can save my motor. But how do i go about tunning the stock ecu, who or where can i get it tuned at in oregon. and if not what is a good reliable way to go thats not going to cost me 2k dollars? just need some input or help please and thank you.
