Simple. Michelin LTX.

All tires feel great when new ("My new car rides so much smoother!" duh. "My new tires are so much quieter than my old ones!" duh.)

It's when a tire performs perfectly after years and miles on 'em that makes them a true standout. The Michelin LTX's have been that tire for us. Smooth, quiet, excellent wet traction, deep tread, SUV tread design, and great quality make this tire a keeper. Our Pathy came with Toyo Transpaths as OE and they were really cruddy. The LTX has transformed our Pathfinder. After close to 2 years and 20K miles, they still impress.

Check Tire Rack for feedback. While not a flashy tire with a bunch of dubious acronyms and "technology", the LTX's are a terrific buy.

Good Luck!

2001 QX4 - I bought Good Year Fortera Silent Armor... 70k mi Warrantee!

Was about $730 out the door including a full alignment Plus I should be getting a $60 rebate on them soon so the tires only were like $630 installed.

The ride is great, good traction for everything I have done so far, although I don't plan on any offroading. I'm geeked about the 70k warrantee.

Factory 17's? I have 16's, here's what I've floated on:

Bridgestone Dueler's255/65R16SFloaty but good in Mud. Smooth Ride, but not silent ~50k miles

Big-O BigFoot Sport Touring T/A255/65R16SGreat Cornering Hold and Breakaway for 2wd slides. Terrible in Rain and Mud, Very Silent. Required Force Balance and 2 tries to get a true set. Wide tires wobble at 65. Tread wears fast. Never pinched. ~30k miles

Michelin Latitude Tour HP255/65R16HGreat Cornering Speed +10-15mph faster than Big-O's. Great wet traction, as good as dry. Breakaway speed is higher but can be unpredictable once breakaway begins (ie, oversteer in 2wd, under in auto), but that's because of the super sticky tires. Brand new. No force balance needed. Very quite and excellent highway ride. Don't look as mud worthy as the duelers or l/s mtx. Very expensive.

My opinion is that the Michelin LTX uses too hard of a rubber for the Pathfinder--the Pathfinder isn't heavy enough for that tire to actually get GREAT wet traction. It's not a bad choice; I just don't think it's the best. The LTX is much better suited for the Armada or like an Expedition or something like that.

What I have had great success with is the Michelin Cross Terrain. It's a 65k mile tire (whereas the LTX is like 80k I think) and it costs a little more than the LTX but the traction is awesome--I would consider it a very high performance tire and it looks sharp on the Pathfinder as well. The rubber is a little softer so it grips like nothing else. Couple that with high end suspension parts (KYB) you'll have a truck that is glued to the road. Oh, and they're very quiet too! Great tire.

A little testimonial...about 2 months ago I was caught in a very heavy downpour in Orlando and on a road under construction where they had barriers on the side of the road. Well, rain lets up but I'm on a road doing 50 mph (which was the speed limit) and suddenly hit a huge puddle (I'm talking probably 5 feet wide and 7 or 8 feet long and several inches deep--just wasn't draining fast enough). Water shot up EVERYWHERE - all over the car, around it...everywhere. My Pathfinder is rear wheel drive not 4 and I was waiting for the spin out to happen...well, it never did. I knew which direction I needed to keep the steering wheel pointing toward and I did...basically drove blind for a few seconds totally at the mercy of my tire traction. Needless to say, I'm alive, no damage to the car, no swerve...car just channeled right through the water unharmed. There aren't too many tires out there you can say that about.

I got the set for my Pathfinder at a local tire store but we also put a set on our Toyota Highlander and those came from Costco and were a little cheaper than from most stores. So if you have a Costco membership you could start there.

I've got the Bridgestone Dueler A/T revos on mine, 265/70R16. In my opinion there a great tire, they're relativley quiet, smooth on the highway and are great in offroad conditions. All around awesome tire!

A friend of mine suggested these, as his family uses them on their farm pickups (full size Chevys and Dodges). He swears by them, so they must be a decent all around.

We're on our second set of Michellin Cross Terrains. We got 60K on the first pair and won't see the end of this current pair since it is getting traded in soon. Great tires....no problems in rain or the rare snow storm that they see.

I've got the Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S on mine (not the A/T Plus II's), and much much better than the stock Dueler HT's, but that's not really saying much, since they weren't great tires to begin with. Much better in the snow, the Duelers were never a good tire there. Good on-road and off-road. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...2FT-S

However, the stock size is a 255-65/16 size, I went with a 255-70/16 replacement. My speedo was reading fast by about 5%, and the new size is slightly larger by about 4%, so now I have an accurate speedometer, as confirmed by GPS.

I have the same and have about 35K on them and couldn't be happier w/them. Seems a little pricey but as my wife's DD, can't complain about safety on these. I have actually taken these on logging trails on my hunting lease... they performed well, but wouldn't suggest it as a regular thing.

Finny,

Pls keep us informed about shoulder wear on your front tires...I find good year tread to be so damn soft...and I think the mileage warranty is done so we actually get decent mileage...
