I need a new exhaust for my 89 SOHC hatch. It already has a custom exhaust on it so I was thinking of just cutting out the muffler and replacing it. Is this a good idea or should I just replace the whole exhaust? I pretty sure the pipe on there is 3''. Should I get a high flow cat too? Resonator? Your opinions would be appreciated.

The one I have now is way too loud and just doesn't sound as nice as any other 240 exhaust I've heard even if those were custom too. Bottom line is I want something better without paying an arm and a leg.

Looks like it to me, and last owner said it might be 3.15''? I don't know, if it's not 3'' it's really close. Btw do cat backs usually come with a resonator cuz mine has one on it.

they normally have a resonator and a muffler before the tip(s).

you should downgrade though, im picking up stock exhaust this weekend so i dont have to deal with 3" on an n/a ka.

if youre still wanting better than stock, youre just gonna have to go to muffler shops to see what you can work out, unless you find a 2.5 inch catback youd like.

its all money though

The exhaust I have on there is from a muffler shop so I'm kinda wondering if all knock off/generic exhaust sound like this one does. Would it be worth the extra $ to buy a apexi N1 muffler or an HKS Hi Power? Also is a 3'' bad for my NA car? I was planing on going turbo but that's not for a year or two.

bigger exhaust is actually proven to be better for KA's, turbo or not.

something like 3" is proven to give like...10hp throughout the powerband without any negative effects?

ive heard apexi n1's, legit ones, are pretty quiet for their size.

That's cool, I'll look into that. One last thing, will a high flow cat make that much of a difference, or does it just provide a minimal icrease in HP. Just wondering.

Large 3" exhausts on a NA KA might increase horsepower, but you lose low end torque, and your car will also be loud.

High flow cats are effective.

So are you guys saying I should rip out my 3'' exhaust and replace it with a 2.5''? Is the torque difference noticable or is it just like 1-2 ft. lbs. I was just thinking of changing the muffler to an Apexi N1 and maybe another cat. I just wanted my exhaust to be a little quiter and have a better sound.

dude go 2.5 all the way from ur exhaust manifold if u want it quiter without losing power use a resonator usually cost u around 50 bucks$the hell with a cat!!just use a resonator about a 24" one you will get good sound and perfomance!!

Gosh, it won't be like 50 horsepower loss. And most likely you'll also gain back some low end torque.Stop sweating about pipe sizes if you aren't turbo'd and get a decent exhaust system that doesn't sound loud.

2.5'' straight pipes all the way back after a hot shot header isnt that loud to be honest and sounds decent.

That with any generic muffler you like should sound pretty good. No real need for a cat or resonator. I feel that crap just screws with resonate frequencies and stuff.

Well I need to keep my car legal because where I live they don't cut you any slack, and that one time waiver thing for failing cars is $450!!! I don't know how it is in VA (Virginia?) but it's probably a lot better than here.

ive gotten 6 tickets for my exhaust lol, but i had a 3" test pipe, i think thats what its called its where the cat was, and 2.5" piping with a Greddy 5" tip exhaust lol.

if anything in VA, i think you'll get pulled for having an exhaust that looks too big

Is it cause your exhaust was too big or was it too loud. That's kinda stupid if they pull you over cause it's too big.

Bro, just buy a nice 2.5in exaust made by a trusted name and be done with it. You may spend more than just replacing your muffler, but you probably won't ever have to worry about it for as long as you own the car. Also a 2.5in would work great with a turbo aswell.

I currently have 2.5 all the way back to some form of a tanabe muffler (came with the car) and it deleted the cat. It's real ricey and loud as all get out. I was thinking maybe of throwing a resonator on it or something but I heard a ka24de with a hks hi-power catback and i'm just in love with the sound it produces. I've been watching them on different sites for around 410.00 shipped. If you just buy a n1 or hi-power muffler alone it will cost around 200 bones, might as well get the package deal. Just my two cents.

I also heard a ka with 2.5 custom piping, hiflow cat and a knock off n1 muffler that sounded pretty great too so it comes down to just how much you would like to spend.
