Need New Engine???

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

My wife's EX35 broke down a week ago and we were told that the cause was a burned up starter. After a week at the dealership they replaced the starter and the same thing happened again during testing. They just called and said the engine needs a new long rod which basically entails installing a brand new engine.

Has anyone ever heard of this before? The car has 41,000 miles so the repair will be done under warranty (thank goodness), but I'm wondering if we should now ditch the car before the warranty us up??

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated...

If they give you a brand new engine, I would keep it since your car's engine will be newer than everyone else's.

However, if they crack your engine open and only replace the broken parts, I would sell it.

I never trust the guys at the dealer to do a proper job tearing down and rebuilding an engine.

I would sell...it's never the same once it's out of the factory. People take short cuts, don't use proper tools, and never torque anything to the right spec..I would get rid of it.

It's so sad...people have no faith and love for their cars now day...

You got 6-year/70,000-mile Powertrain coverage, which means you still have atleast 2 year the way you drive with a brand new motor...so what's the hurry of getting rid of it?

I am really curious what exactly went wrong with your engine?

I have never seen an EX need an engine. A catastrophic failure is extremely rare but like winning the lottery anything is possible.

Next time you talk to them see how much info you can get.

As for the comments about doubting the guys doing the work. I can see where you are coming from but they are not all bad at their jobs. There are many guys who take their jobs' very seriously. If they are performing a job that might make you hate your vehicle I would be willing to bet you a beer the tech would be proud to meet you and try to put some of your fears at ease. This type of repair can have some "unforeseen consequences" but this is usually a job left to senior techs, or those with more experience being a seemingly rare incident.

Infiniti is far more cautious than many of the other manufacturers. I was surprised when I came to Nissan from MB where they built engines all the time. BMW has techs replacing small internals regularly, their engines bays are so confined that the majority of the engine needs to be disassembled to free whatever is damaged. I have replaced dozens (over many years and for many reasons) of damaged engines. I have even installed a short block (just the block and pistons) just a few months ago, in about 15 hours. The job only paid me 12.5 hours, and cost me about $150 in tools but that car ran perfectly when it left.

Ask questions if you are curious or worried about anything, I bet you get an answer and if not head down there to say Hi.
