Jeff and I were noticing how there are no lights under the hood of Infinitis, at least not on my Q45 or QX4. We guessed that Infiniti didn't plan on owners really spending anytime under the hood. I mean if you can afford a $50k car in 1994, you probably won't be doing any work under the hood.

But, we know better don't we? I see off road rigs with led lights mounted on the undercarriage so spotters can help them navigate trails at night. So, I was thinking that there might be some way to rig some led lights under the hood. Has anyone done or thought about this before?

search the junkyards for a datsun 280zx,which had an elegant lamp with switch underhood that had a long cord attached that you could dismount and move around to look at different areas under the hood

89 Chevy Silverado also has the under hood lamp you can pull out from it's housing and move around to your liking.

My old Dodge Dakota also has a light. I suppose hooking it to the hood pin switch would be easy enough, or installing one separately. Mounting it to the hood might be the hard part. I can see a few member screwing right through to the outside of the hood...

Yeah my 88 Jeep XJ has a light with a removable head too, but I was thinking something a little more hi-tech like LED lights (white of course) hidden right at the top or something.

And.....I'm thinking about these from a functionality side to be able to have light under the hood to work on engine, check oil, clean, etc. NOT to trick it out so it looks cool....but if that's a side effect so be it.

Headband with batteries and LED.........................useful away from vehicle when you need to work under crawl space, attics, inside septic tanks and sewers like all those who buy new Q.

I brought this up years ago and ended up going with the headlight suggestion, but now I'm back wanting to install some LED lights under the hood.

I think I'm going to buy these. I suspect I'll only need two strips, but who knows.

Question is whether to use a toggle switch, a pin switch or a mercury switch?

Anything but a mercury switch. The sucker will come on when you're driving downhill, or uphill, or any time you park unevenly.
I prefer the toggle switch for maximum user control.

PS: I like when old relevant threads like these are bumped. I have seen lamps under the hoods of some American trucks, but I don't think I'd ever seen any of them as moveable. That's a neat idea.

That's a good point on the hills and such. It seemed like a cool idea to just have automatically it come on when the hood opened.

Earlier todayI was thinking that since installing little led lights is so easy now that perhaps I could install a few different circuits and have them on switches. Maybe some under the hood, the firewalls, down low in the engine bay?
