Hi,

I have Good Year Eagle GT (P215/60R15) tires on my 1996, J 30. I had them for the last 3 years (Jul' 2003) and drove around 30,000 miles. The front tires have 2/60 of the thread left but the rear ones are worn off completely unevenly towards inside than outside, especially the rear left one. Is this usual behaviour on the tires or may be the wheel alignment was not proper. I did it for every 6 months for the last 3 years.

My car starts vibrating, if i'm driving 50 mph or more. I went for tire rotation/balancing and wheel alignment at firestone (got lifetime service for both). The firestone guy told to replace all the tires.

The Good Year Eagle GT are listed with 50,000 miles warranty on walmart website. I got these purchased & installed at the showroom. Can anyone suggest with any other brand of tires of I can go this time which are more durable and last long until the miles they mention on the warranty. I want to go with Michelin Pilot XGT H4 but wanted to get some thoughts.

Thanks in Advance

tirerack.com is your friend. I heard some good things about Kumho tires, too.

Being in Florida as you are this may not be the most helpful of information since these are all season tires........ I am in the process of replacing mine and did a lot of research, tire rack, consumer reports, etc. It came down to two tires. The Yokohama TRZ and the Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread. I ended up going with the TRZ because of the price difference (the TRZ is about 2/3 the price). Both are 80,000 mile tires. You may want to check them out.

I have the Goodyear Assurance on my 94Q and I am very pleased with them. I plan to put them on my 96 J which is currently has Dunlops which are not that great.

However...before I do. The orignal poster mentioned that the tires on their J were wearing on the inside as well as a vibration at 50 mph and above.

I have a similar problem, on the left side only. the very inside of the tires on the lft side of the car are very worn, almost down to the wires not to mention flat spots (I rotate every 3Kmiles). The car will also get a very noticeable wopple at the left front wheel at around 40-50mph then smooth out at both higher and lower speeds. The tires check out and I had the dealer check the front end and they found nothing. The dealer did mention an old TSB that said to replace the strut inserts if there was an unexplained wobble.

Anyone know the answer to this mystery? I am wondering if the original poster may be having the same problem. I did see one post regarding the replacement of the lower contol arm...

TIA

Both of you seem to have a variety of issues that don't completely add up to a single cause. But I do have things for you to look at and think about.

First, there are two different Assurance tires. The triple tread variety is the one that was so highly touted. Its advantage over the TRZ was only when it came to dealing with snow.

Excess wear only on the inside or outside is almost always related to alignment. Of course alignment can be off simply because suspension pieces are worn.

Flat spotting on the tires is almost always caused, aside from locking the tires and skidding across the pavement, by weak or dead struts and the problem is usually aggravated by a balance issue which continues to get worse as the flat spots get worse.

A 'wopple' as put, not under braking but just driving, is often slack in the steering, most notably the tie rod. Of course it could be in the rack as well. This to can be aggravated by alignment issues (which can also be caused by the slack in the steering system, circular, isn't it!) and if severe enough and cause excessive inner tread wear. If the car likes to dart about under hard braking then this is indicative of toe out which can also be caused by worn suspension pieces allowing the car to toe out when in motion.

If the 'wopple' or feeling of out of balance comes on centered around a specific speed, often about 65, and diminishes above and below that speed, often you are looking at a dynamic balance issue. Some tires are notorious for this including the Goodyear GT and BFG TA's. A good balance on a Hunter Road Force variation machine will tell if your tire is in spec or if you have a total dud.

If you have the car aligned and the person doing the job does not catch worn suspension pieces (bushing are fairly easy to miss depending on how they are housed) will result in a car that will align fine on the rack, but them behave poorly on the road.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input. I think it has to be a suspension component dispite the dealer saying they found all in order. based on what you said I think I will start by changing out the strut inserts and take a hard look at the tie rod and go from there.

the triple treads are a good choice for me as I live in NC and get enough snow to want a good all weather tread particually with the car being RWD. I was told that the triple treads actually have finely ground lava in the tread to give it more traction in the snow.

No problem... and by the way, I sure do enjoy the Carolinas!

If you have a really good suspension shop, you may want to take it there. In desperation I have done that a few times and they have found problems that every dealer overlooked. Just a thought.

In a recent comsumer reports that compared the Triple Tread (TT) side by side with the TRZ (and a bunch of other tires), the TT came out with a score of 80 and the TRZ 73 with the TT being slightly better in the snow. We get just enough snow up here that is a concern for me as well (at least the J is a little better then my 300ZX was in the snow!). Looking at tire rack, the two for light snow, deep snow and ice where given scores of 8.9, 8.4 and 8.3 repspectively for the TT while the TRZ scored 8.2, 7.0 and 7.4 respectively. The TT scored higher in all catagories except ride comfort and noise but most differences where less then < 0.5 points (out of ten). Tire rack has them both, $99 for the TT and $61 for the TRZ... both are 80,000 mile tires.

Two others that where top picks where the Michilen X radial DT and the Hankook H725.

Update, the new TRZ's are installed and what a difference. No more shaking or wandering and a HUGE increase in wet weather control. Nice touring tire....

It is always wonderful to hear:WOW my brand new tires are so much better than my old worn out internally destroyed 3 year old tires...................the question for any tire is how they hold up after the 8,000 mile period and again at the 20,000 mile point where tires start exponentially failing.

Any tire that last more than 30,000 miles in spirited driving is scarey to me because of the diminished wet braking performance in a system designed for use with tires that last only 20,000 miles...........oem tires were fast wearing for a reason to get them off the car before their performance degraded too much.
