I am new to the car audio thing and I was planning on getting a single 10" sitting in a custom side trunk box. I now have the Bose speakers in my car so can i keep all the stock bose things and just add the 10? And what amp should i buy if i get this? I was also thinking about getting this sub. http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Shop ... /SFV/30046

I would stay away from Kicker if I were you.. and yes you can keep everything else stock. Just make sure your RMS and Peak RMS on your amp doesn't exceed that of the subwoofer.

What do you recommend?

And then so get a less power amp then the subs?

I'm kind of a JL fanboy so I would suggest the 10" or 12" W3V3, they are a bit more pricier, around $200, but have really nice sound. I have two 10s of those and they sound amazing. You should be able to fit a 12" if your going with a custom side box.

And yeah, either match or a little less. For example my amp has 1000W RMS at 2 ohms and I have two W3V3s at 500 RMS.

Ok so if i get one 10 W3V3 i should get an amp with 500w rms. okay thanks!

That would be a good setup, there are a lot of mono class D amps with 500 watts rms on the market. I am using an Alpine Type R 12" sub running at 2ohm on 500watts and it's plenty loud/powerful/tasty.

I think I got my setup. Im on a tight budget considering I'm only 16.

A single Kicker S10L7 10" 600W RMS Dual 2 Ohm and a Kicker ZX500.1 R Monoblock 500W RMS 2 Ohm.

If you are going to do Kicker for budget reasons, at least stay away from the L7 series. The square woofer is sloppy as all hell, no rigidity at all. If you like the specs on it otherwise, go for CompVX.

Ok, thanks. last question..

If i have the Bose system without nav, and want to keep my bose system the same and get a separate amp just for the sub, how would i run it to the stock radio?

You need to tap into some speaker-level leads (like the actually positive and negative wires running to each speaker) and use them to power a Line out convertor or LOC. From there you will have line level RCAs that you can plug into any amp. OR even more easily you can buy many amps that accept speaker level inputs and use the internal LOC from your amp.

Some of the Kenwood mono class D amps have this feature, just to name one.

Hey you're gonna have to go with a dual 4ohm sub and wire at a 2ohm load for that amplifier. It's only 2ohm stable and a dual 2ohm sub is gonna give you either a 1ohm load or a 4ohm load. Just make sure o u post up exactly what you'r gonna get before you get it and I can let you know if it will work for sure!

^ I was going to type that what Alex wrote was incorrect, but then I re-read it and am now typing to confirm that he is correct. At first I thought he said that a dual 4 ohm would NOT work, but thats exactly what you need. Dual 4 ohm wired parallel.

I have 2 Kicker CompVR 10's in my AC that pound. There is nothing wrong with kicker, just use a good quality amp to push them.

i second that kickers just are not that good. i have a digital designs 2510 running at 1000rms at 1 ohm from a Digital Designs cm1000m amp and it hits harder than any other single 10 i have heard before. Plus Digital Designs speakers and amps are handmade in america.

Well I actually did some quick research. All these numbers are 10" models.

Here are specs on the Digital Designs 2510:

Specifications
Cutout Diameter 9.16"
FS 40 Hz
Magnet Weight 160 oz
Mounting Depth (in.) 7.14"
Nominal Impedance D4.0 Ohm / D2.0 Ohm
Power Handling RMS/Peak 800/3200
QTS 0.664
QES 0.735
QMS 6.872
Shipping Weight 23lbs
Suspension Travel 66 mm
VAS 10.21
Voice Coil Diameter 2.5" / 63mm

Here are specs on a Kicker CompVX:

Model CVX10

Size (IN.,CM) 10, 25
Impedance (OHMS) 2 or 4 DVC
Max Rec Amplifier Power (WATTS PEAK/RMS)* 1200/600
Sensitivity (dB 1w/1m) 85.7
Frequency Response (Hz) 24-500
Mounting Depth (IN.,CM) 5-15/16, 15.1
Mounting Cutout (IN.,CM) 9-3/16, 23.3
Min Rec Sealed Box Volume (CU. FT., Liters) .8, 22.7
Max Rec Sealed Box Volume (CU. FT., Liters) 3.0, 85.0
Min Rec Vented Box Volume (CU. Ft., Liters)** 1.25, 35.4
Max Rec Vented Box Volume (CU. Ft., Liters)** 1.75, 49.6

And here is a Kicker CompVR:

Model CVR10

Size (IN.,CM) 10, 25.0
Impedance (OHMS) 2 or 4 DVC
Max Rec Amplifier Power (WATTS PEAK/RMS)* 800/400
Sensitivity (dB 1w/1m) 83.6
Frequency Response (Hz) 25-500
Mounting Depth (IN.,CM) 5 1/2, 14.0
Mounting Cutout (IN.,CM) 9 3/16, 23.3
Min Rec Sealed Box Volume (CU. FT., Liters) 0.8, 22.7
Max Rec Sealed Box Volume (CU. FT., Liters) 3, 85
Min Rec Vented Box Volume (CU. Ft., Liters)** 1.25, 35.4
Max Rec Vented Box Volume (CU. Ft., Liters)** 1.75, 49.6

Seems that both Kicker models have better frequency response (I think, the Digi Designs website is cryptic). To me that is most important. Only advantage for DD is that it can handle more (rated) power.

I own two 10" CompVXs and I will testify that they are very clean, low to mid-range subs. They will make ANY genre sound clear. I dont think everyone's idea of good/clear/acceptable bass is the same in this thread, hence the Kicker bashing. I listen to ALL genres of music. I need to be able to play Notorious BIG followed by Pink Floyd followed by Frank Sinatra, with all 3 sounding full. Kicker can indeed make that happen.

I actually still own a VERY old set of 12" JL W3s. They are great subs as well, worked great in my old truck in a sealed box. BUT, again this is where personal taste comes in. They have a decent frequency response, but dont get high enough into mid level for my preference.

Specs:

Size 10 -inch
Impedance 4 ohms
Cone Material Mineral-filled poly
Surround Material Rubber
Ideal Sealed Box Volume (cubic feet) 0.625
Ideal Ported Box Volume (cubic feet) 1.125
Port diameter (inches) N/A
Port length (inches) N/A
Free-Air No
Dual Voice Coil No
Sensitivity 84.87 dB at 1 watt
Frequency Response 25 - 250 Hz
RMS Power Range (Watts) 100-500
Peak Power Handling (Watts) 1000
Top Mount Depth (inches) 5 7/8
Bottom Mount Depth (inches) N/A
Cutout Diameter or Length (inches) 8 15/16
Vas (liters) 32.23
Fs (Hz) 31.49
Qts 0.485
Xmax (millimeters) 14

Yeah, I guess it is personal preference because I think 250 is way high enough for a subwoofer, let the stock small subwoofer handle the mids. I think I have my LPF set to somewhere around 90, i know it's a slope from there up, but still.

^Well 250 definitely is, as long as you have a mid bass or something else to fill in the gap.

digital designs are way underrated. google them and see for yourself. for example they are rated at 800rms but i have been pushing mine way over that at low impedance for well over a year. i have had kicker, focal, and punch t1's and i used to think that kicker was the best until i got DD, and i'm never going back

you also need to think about reliability. DD>kicker is that regards also. just go on some car audio forums to see what i am talking....people that know what they are talking about actually laugh at this comparison. digital designs holds more spl records than any other company, take a listen at one of their woofers and you'll know why. Considering price, quality, and spl, DD wins in all catagories. When you're buying mainstream speakers like kicker, jl, ect. you're paying for the name. i'm not saying that they aren't good, they are good, but not for what you pay and since not everybody has all the money in the world, its the first thing I consider.

Thats great. I want my music to sound good, through all ranges, with best cost/quality ratio. Again, I dont think your idea of "good" bass is the same as mine. I could give a rat's arse about who performs the best in a contest most often competed in with test waves from a computer.

I guess what we need to do is ask the OP what THEY are looking for, not what we each prefer.
