I've been out of the "scene" since the early 90's. I had a RC10 back in those days, wicked fun! Anyway, my son Dylan (5), has been asking for one. Too late for Christmas, but nothing I've looked at seems to be worth the $$ they are asking. I haven't found any actual "hobby stores" in my local, but I haven't looked all that hard either. Over the past 2 years we've spent enough on pieces of junk that I could have purchased a really nice unit by now.

Anyone have any suggestions? Something good in the grass, 4wd or 2wd, so long as it's off road capable. And obviously it needs to be sturdy, he's 5. Never too young though.

I've been eyeing the Axial R/C cars for a while now. They're a bit pricey, but you can build them with a ton of different options and they will crawl over anything. The Dingo and the Honcho models were the ones I was looking at. You can buy a bunch of different bodies for them too, so they have ones like a Jeep Cherokee and ect. They run between $200-350, depending on the model you get, but you can find them on Craigslist fairly cheap sometimes.

If you're looking for something at a lower price than that, i'd head over to Radio Shack and buy something. I've had numerous ones from there over the years and they've done just fine. In fact, I still have a 4x4 truck in the attic from there.

I was going to buy one from RS but I was afraid that the motor wouldn't be strong enough to actually drive through the grass. It seems that whenever I cheap out I get something that "looks" like it will be sweet only to find out the motor should be powering something akin to a hotwheels.

My mother in law got me a 2-pack of R/C cars from Sams Club a few years ago and I played with them once for the reason you listed above. They absolutely sucked. I've been meaning to try to modify them and put a bigger motor in them.

My old 4x4 RadioShack truck never was that bad though for the most part. I always had fun with the thing, but unless it had a full charge it wasn't that amazing at climbing things.

If you don't mind spending the extra dough, the Axials are great. Look up Axial on YouTube and check out the videos of them. They literally treat them like a real 4x4 and they're electric.

All this talk about R/C cars is making me wish I would've asked for one of them for Christmas instead of a new tablet :gapteeth:

Thx brosef. I'll look into Axial and maybe visit the local RS later on.
