It's not uncommon for them to rust themselves on. If you've got an oxy-acetylene torch, try heating it up. Sometimes that will expand it enough to break it free of the crank. Just don't get too crazy with it and melt the oil pump or get the crank too hot.

You can also try cutting it with a cutoff wheel where the woodruff key is at. Then use a chisel to spread it the rest of the way apart, which should break the last of the metal and loosen it up.

You can also try drilling and tapping 2 or 3 holes in it, and then use a piece of steel on the end of the crank with holes in it to pull the pulley off kind of like a steering wheel puller or a crank pulley puller.

Don't be afraid to try any combination of these as well.

I drilled and tapped two holes then bought a timing gear puller. Worked perfect.

Don't drill to far or you may nick the crank.

I hacksawed mine. I cut across the face of it, with the blade facing the engine..taking a chunk off and getting very close to the crank snout...then I hit it with a cold chisel and cracked it and it fell off. If I were doing it over I would have drilled a few holes in a row starting near the crank snout and going outward...then hit that spot with the chisel.

cut that ***** off!

here's what I ended up doing.

NO gear puller will fit behind the gear.

- I heated up the gear with a welding torch and me and another dude used two 3ft. pry bars. We spent around 20min. heating/slamming the pry bars. Let me just say the lil old CA block looked like it was on the back of a bucking bull. We managed to "walk" the timing gear off far enough to slide the oil pump forward off the dowels for me to pull the crank/oil pump out together.

then I just got out the grinder and chisel and that took 1 min.

save time, engery, and money and cut the bastard off. by far the worst part of my build.

I split em with a a chisel and throw the two halves in opposite directions. I do this because they have vexed me and I wish both pieces to always feel the incomplete as the rust away at opposite ends of the drainage ditch in front of the house.

We are talking about the cog gear down on the crank. They damned-near weld themselves on sometimes.
