right now I have a rb25det in my s13 hatch, and I want to upgrade the turbo, but using stock manifold. I would like a turbo capable somewhere in the 350-450hp range probablly an internal wastegate. I want the turbo to fit with as little modification as possible, bolting right in being the obvious best choice. what options do I have and what would you recommend? i was thinking tr44, looks like its what I want, but im not sure on the hp range on it. also was looking at the gt30r but Im not sure which setup would work for less modification to get it to fit

go to horsepowerinabox.com. they have a few garrett gt series turbos that will bolt up to the stock mani and dump. they have the gt3071, and gt3076 which will both handle up to 500hp.

email mee at [email protected] if you want a better deal on any of these turbos

Get a professionals opinion who is familiar with what can fit in a 240 chassis. I use Evergreen Turbo Co. (800) 275-2531 speak to Charlie. He has been building turbos for me and my stuff for the past 18 years. VERY knowledgable and won't sell you something that won't fit your aplication just because it's "the newest, blinginest" A real no nonsense guy who is a second generation turbo shop. I'm sure he's forgotten more about turbos than most of the others have ever known. I'm a little biased, sorry.

on a side note, how big are stock injectors? at what psi should I think about getting bigger injectors once I have an upgraded turbo?

the stock injectors are 370cc; it's reliable for about 300hp; but you want to get atleast 550cc to be on the safe side for your power range------ i would get 750cc to give yourself more room down the road.

if you have the $ for a gt series, a gt35r would be a good match for the rb25, but then, for the budget turbo, a to4e (sc61 will be equivalent of the gt35 but 1/2 the cost) will work out just fine.

update:

I ended up buying a used T3/T04e bolt on turbo that ended up failing, and leaking oil. So I am back in the market for for a turbo. Ive been really out of the game for awhile, been hanging out as an NRRB member for years... because... "life happens" and finally recently been fortunate enough to finally have time and money to spend on my car again. Again I would like it to be as close to bolt on as possible, stock manifold and internal waste gate. My goals for my car is to put down ~400whp on pump gas. Quick spool as the car is (supposed to be) a DD. Most likely a turbo will be the last major mod done to the engine, and i will never touch the engine again to stay out of the NRRB.

My current mods are;

Greddy style Intake Manifold
Deatschwerks 650cc injectors
Q45 Throttle body
z32 Maf
Power FC + Datalogit
Blitz ebc

Am I hoping for too much? What are my options?

Currently looking into HyperGear's turbos http://www.digi-hardware.com/turbocharger.html and hoping to hear from them soon.

Id appreciate anyones input and opinons.

I'd go with a GT2876R (or similar size) for best response, but be advised that it will not likely make much more than 400 at the wheels before it runs out of steam. The 3076R spools slightly late and would be bigger than you need for your power goals. A 3071R might be a good compromise if you plan on pushing more power, and it is available with the new GTX compressor wheel which gives it slightly more top end than the GT3076R.

Who sells direct bolt on versions of 3071r? Could be what I end up getting...

make sure you wind the turbo studs out of the manifold and get some longer bolts/extra flange as the 30r's compressor cover is rather large and will foul on the manifold without a spacer.

ricky is selling a complete bolt on modified stock manifold for use with the 30r, it appears to be a pretty reasonable piece for what you get.

I use an HKS GT-RS turbine, it is a direct bolt on to all of the stock stuff. HKS makes a whole series of bolt on applications for the RB engine. I posted a video of the kit here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGgm_RzA8HE HKS is on the expensive side though. This kit was $2700.00USD
The GT-RS can easily make 400-450 HP in the right application.

Good point! I knew the 3076R compressor interfered with the valve cover and required a spacer flange, but I wasn't sure about the 3071. Would he need to mess with a spacer flange and new studs if he went with the 2876R?

Is the 2876r just a smaller physical size?

Man I'm surprise nobody has mention the hx35, I seen a few on here that used it with the stock manifold, although I don't really know if they modified it or not but it seems to be a good reliable budget turbo..

Yeah the compressor housing is smaller.

Check out an app called "Boost Adviser" by Garrett. Yes, adviser is spelled wrong...I just found this app yesterday and it is awesome! You enter a bunch of key inputs into it and it spits out turbo recommendations. The recommendations even include plots of your points on the compressor maps to show what flow rate and pressure ratio you will have to operate at to achieve your power goals. :naughty:

CGC turbo's and hypergear turbos both australian companies that modify the stock turbo with bigger internals rated to 450hp. both Direct bolt ons and a very low profile look.

I've been down that road it does require modification to the manifold. I had problems finding someone willing to weld cast for me. then I still had fitment issues just sold everything and went back to stock. I think the OP is looking for something internally gated so crazy modifications aren't neccesary.
