My new to me 86.5 V6 5speed hardbody has trans problems. When I bought truck shifter was locked up and would not move at all. I pulled trans apart and found 5th gear fork broken and spring clip for 5th gear synco missing. I put it back together with new replacment parts and new clutch kit, now I have all gears but 5th it is like the shifter doesnt move far enough to engage all the way. If you are stopped and put in 5th it will go in and start to move when you let out on clutch then it will pop out and grind. So I am no expert on manual trans but it went together pretty easy. I need some opinions on to tear down again and what to look for or where to find a good used one. This is to be mt daily driver and in a big hurry to get it goin.

I have never been inside a transmission before, hopefully someone here has. I think you have a FS5R30A, though; and not a FS5W71C or FS5W71B like the 4cyl trucks. If I am wrong on that one, I quit. If I am right, then it is the designated the same as a Z32 transmission and may have similar internals.

Junkyards are best cheap way and get a warranty, most will give a 30-90 day warranty on them. if the manual works it is usually good for a long time. Just change fluid on any used one to be sure and have clean gear oil in it.

There is a company in Florida that sells rebuilt 4x4 FS5W71C's for about $800 the last I knew, not sure about the other truck transmission codes. Is your's a 2wd? It sounds like you might have put something together wrong; and it might be nice to get some instructions and overhaul it again, replacing maybe some bearings and other stuff if needed be. How many moving parts are in there? Now I am asking questions, sorry, If I knew more I could be more definite.

Yea it is 2 wheel drive and I followed the service manual. It was broke when I got it and when I took it a part the fork was broke for 5th and spring clips on syncro where broke . I guess I will pull out again.

Check your shifter linkage. It may be binding or even a bit bent. I can well imagine the PO yanking and slamming the shifter around trying to shift. Does it shift in reverse OK?

I tore it back down and I found 5th gear shifting problem. Stupid me put 5th gear sleeve coupling on backwards (duh!), now it shifts good. Now I just need to fix driveability, truck has sat a long time and the gas smells bad. I gave her plugs, cap and rotor and wires ( all nissan oem), runs whole lot better but still stumbles under pull. I guess I will have to clean the tank out.

I forget whether this is on just the z24i, or the vg30i, too (their TBI units were out at the same time and only for a few years). I read about a problem where the two injector circuits bridge together on the wiring harness, . It is wierd because the injector wires come off the ECU as two circuits, then bridge together on the way there, and then split back apart into two before reaching the injectors. Where they bridge together, there can be some corrosion not unlike a corroded battery terminal, and this can make headaches. I forgot where I read that thread, though, but I think the owner was describing similar problems to yours. But, new gas first.
