My timing chain rattles only when I start the car. If I start the car and then start it 30 mins. later it dosen't rattle. It only rattles on start-up when it's been sitting for a while. It's a freshly rebuilt KA24E, replaced the timing chain & guides ( not dealer parts ), and I replaced the tensioner ( factory nissan part ) The tensioner is sealed good with THE RIGHT STUFF gasket maker. I know this because I have already pulled it back apart and resealed the tensioner. Am I using the wrong gasket maker? Do I need to make a paper gasket for it? Is it because of the cheap guides? Maybe, did I not prime the oil pump ( brand new high volume pump ) well enough? Could it be a leaking oil galley plug ( installed by the machine shop ) ? I am at a loss here. I don't want to tear it back apart until I have a good idea of what I should be looking for. Any info would be great. Thanks, Jerred

seal the tensioner?!?! uh oh...i most certainly did not do that lol(upper tensioner). the old one wasn't sealed and i never saw anything/anyone saying i needed to...

anywho, it's most likely a matter of oil pressure. i've got an oil leak and whenever it gets low it starts rattling at low rpm's.

my ka24e was rattleing on start up as well, mines a genuine engine that has done about 140 k miles, I just finished puting a new kit through mine an hour ago, Im going to start it in about 12 hours time cause I want my silicone gaskets to dry a bit before I start it up.

Im hoping it will be quiet, because after about 20 hours of work one would want it to be, I to, did not use genuine bits, over here in australia, nissan wanted 575 dollars just for the parts, I found a reputable company/brand and bought the kit for 200 dollars. it all looked ok, the tensioner was made in japan.

Im sort of half expecting the rattle to still be there, because the original stuff I pulled out was still in pretty good nick, the chain only had about 1 mm of stretch in it, and the main guide wasnt too bad, it was only worn a bit.

In my quest for a quiet engine, I even considered manually stretching the spring thats in the tensioner, to try and give the new chain even more tension, but my mechanic bro advised against doing that, so I put everything in as standard. Anyway tomorrow I will know how good or bad it is,...wish myself luck !!

OK Ive been driving it for half a day now, and,........... good news folks , so far, so quiet, "what cam chain, do I have one of those",

JAY 240, one thing I learned from another thread, was that little 1.5 mm hole that feeds the tensioner with oil, I repeatedly squirted petrol in there and blow 110 psi of air in there afterwards, cause I reckon theres a chance that a lot of these holes are partially blocked, which would mean oil goes thru slower than it should, ( just a thought ), also with mine I didnt put gasket stuff behind my tensioner, I dont think its needed, but I must admit I was tempted to do that, but I restrained.

anyway fingers crossed my rattle has gone for a good while, cheers

I have the same problem i replaced my timing chain and tensioner with after market parts and two weeks down the road it started to rattle agen. So i replaced them with nissan parts and now i can still hear the chain rattling and the car has started to spit and sputter agen. If you could shine some light on my situation would be much appreciated. THANKS.
