Next week I go for my driver's exam and I'm trying to iron out the last few issues the car has. The main one that had plagued me from day one is a faulty speedometer. Sometimes it'll work perfectly and other times it won't work at all or it'll jump around a lot. It almost never works over 50mph and if I step on it real hard in 1st it'll go dead all together.

I've already checked most of the easily accessible connections and replaced the speed sensor with one out of an 89 or 90 s13 but I haven't had any luck at all. I can't really tell if my problem is at the cluster or the sensor. Does anyone know of what would be causing this? I'd appreciate any advise anyone car offer. I don't really want to waste the money on a new gauge if that's not my problem or a new sensor if that's not the problem either.

-Thanks A lot,Dustin

At the dealership we see gauges go bad more than you would think. We don't see alot of 240s however. Is is very possible the gauge has sh*t the bed. Im pretty sure you can replace just the gauge itself and not the whole cluster. As easy as most Nissan clusters are to take out and as cheap as you could find a 240 cluster for...... you may just wanna throw the part at it. Plug the full junkyard cluster in before you swap any gauges. If that fixes it then replace the gauge. If she no workey workey after that then you know the problem is most likely in the circuit board on the back, in which case you already have the part in hand. good luck

I've heard of a lot of people having this problem including me. If it's not my gauge cluster (which I'm almost positive it's not) it is definately the gear in my transmission that drives the speed sensor. Sorry for the potential bad news. It can really only be three things: transmission gear, speed sensor, cluster.

And btw, you'll have to pull the transmission out if that's the problem.
