I have a 98 Maxima (automatic) with 69K, and every time I hit the gas when cruising the trans. seems to jolt. Then when I let off the gas, it jolts again. Each time clunking loudly. If I turn overdrive off it is not as bad...could it be a torque converter problem? Any ideas? It is getting freaking annoying. It only seems to do it when the trans. is warm...

P.S.- The trans fluid looks normal considering it hasn't been flushed in two years, but does smell slightly burnt...but does not seem abnormal.

Sounds like the CV joints. See if the boots are torn or leaking.Try making some slow sharp turns in the parking lot and listento see if they make a lot of noise.

ENGINE MOUNT FOR SURE...your transmission is fine, check all of your engine mounts...it's probably your front engine mount directly behind the radiator.

when you push on the gas the engine rotates forward causing the engine mount to clunk b/c the rubber is compromised...when you let off the gas the engine rotates back causing the mount to hit the inside top of the metal sleeve.

check it out and get back!!

To check motor mount, get a friend to rev up engine "pretty good"and see if the motor moves a lot in the engine compartment. If a mount is broken it might move a lot-if cracked it will be hard totell. If there is metal noise after the RPM goes down, the rubber mightbe cracked or worn out on the mount. If its really bad you might haveoil leaks (probably transmission fluid) since the CV axles are not liningup where they are supposed to be

you don't need HIGH rpms to run this test, just rotate the throttle arm on the Valve body, listen for the knock, and watch how much the engine moves...it's best to just take a look at your mounts with your eyes.

PS: PLEASE make sure your engine is in PARK(P) before you run this test.
