Need help with my 240sx

So I purchased a 240sx (auto) that needs a lot of work, but I really like the car so I want to work with it. it cant go into 4th gear from what I am told, so the engine runs really high and burns a lot of gas. i need to get this fixed asap. i was told that its the shifting solenoid thats the problem but i dont really know cars as much as i should. any suggestions

Well, you can probably switch in another auto trans, OR go for a 5 speed swap.

There is a trans conroller device, and you can isolate it to see if it shifts. I'll search for the link.

As for fuel, do a good tune up with extra. Plugs, gapped, wires, cap and rotor, clean the iacv, clean the throttle body, replace PCV and fuel filter, check and lube or replace injector orings, and check the timing.

I'm actually not sure what i want to do. I do know that i want to keep the carthough. I was thinking about a 5 speed swap but thats a little out of my price range right now. Thanx for the advice yall i will definitely keep it in mind these next few weeks!
