Alright so when I bought my QX4 it only came with two keys, the valet and wallet/emergency keys and the master key was missing. I was wondering if the master key and the emergency key are the same thing. I ordered a blank master key and I was planning on cutting it the same as the emergency key. Also my car is a 1998 QX4 and I'm not sure if it has a transponder chip key as the one that I am ordering does.

Any replies are appreciated, thanks.

Yes make sure the one you are ordering is a transponder key which will need to be programmed by either the dealer i have a 02 pathfinder they charged me 80buks for that crap. Or I also have been hearing that there are some locks smiths as well that are capable of doing this! W/out this being done car key wont be of much use other than a paper weight lol (car wont start) w/out the programming.

How is the valet key different from the master key?

Usually the valet key opens the doors and starts the vehicle, but you can't unlock the glove box (or trunk, in the case of cars).

Thanks everyone for replying, but does that mean they are the same? I don't think my car uses a transponder chip because I can start the car with the emergency key and it doesn't have a transponder key.

Since the emergency key does not have a transponder chip in it, it should not be able to start the vehicle. It can open the doors and hatch (in case you lock your "real" keys inside), and in some instances you can turn the key in the ignition (to turn on the radio, supply power to power windows, disengage the steering wheel lock so you can turn your front wheels left/right, etc). The emergency key should not be able to start your vehicle -- you may be able to crank the engine, but if a key with no transponder chip (or the wrong chip) is used, no power will be delivered to the fuel pump. The vehicle won't run (or might run for a couple seconds, then die).

If the emergency key *can* start the vehicle, then that means at some point in the past the system that checks for the transponder chip has been bypassed (perhaps as a cost-saving measure by a garage that installed a remote starter). However, from my understanding this is very difficult to do in a Pathfinder/QX4.

When I bought my pathfinder the dealer only had one key, stupidly enough I still haven't made a spare, I'm going to be in a really s*** situation if I lose it...
