I did a search, not only through this forum, but I've also scoured the Internet for answers and I can't find any specific to my problem.

I just bought an 08 350z and I noticed that the keyless entry range wasn't the greatest. So naturally I assumed a new battery would increase this. Well, turns out that once I replaced the battery, the keyfob stopped working. Ok no worries, it just needs to be reprogrammed. Found out how to do it on the Internet. Everything goes just as the directions say. The hazards come on to initiate programming, and they flash again once I press LOCK on the keyfob. I turn the ignition off, remove the key, and unlock the doors via the door panel (and have tried manually), open the door and close it. Drat, still doesn't work. I have spent hours on this, and to no avail, it just won't work.

I am hoping to avoid a trip to the dealership because it will take me a while to make it there due to a crap work schedule. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I'm missing something simple here?

Exact directions I've been following are as follows:
1. Close all doors and lock all doors

2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition key cylinder more than six times within 10 seconds.
(The hazard warning lamp will then flash.)
NOTE:
Key should be withdrawn from ignition key cylinder completely each time.

NOTE:
Do not rush the insertion/removal key cycling process. The side
marker/tail/license lamps and interior illumination will flash twice when this step is
accurately completed.

3. Insert key on ignition key cylinder and turn ignition key switch to "AAC" position
At this time, the new ID code is entered and original (previous) ID codes are erase.

4. Press any button on the new remote controller once. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash)

NOTE:
Do not press the button more than one time in the above step. If the button
is pressed more than one time, the programming procedure will not be successful.
The side marker/tail/license lamps and interior illumination will flash twice when this
step is accurately completed and programming is successful.

If there is only one remote controller skip step 5.

5. Additional ID code entry
Release the door lock, then lock again with door lock/unlock switch
(In power window main switch)

6. Remove key from ignition

7. Unlock driver side door, open driver side door and then close the door. (END)
edit: I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. Should be in Technical. Sorry about that.

The forum location is fine for now. We can move it if you don't get the traffic though.

Try swapping steps 6 and 7 to see if that does it.
Are you just doing the 1 FOB, or are you doing 2?

Update:

I found time to take it to a dealership today. They ran into the same problem I did. So they tried a new one and it programmed fine. So my key fob has issues. They wanted to charge me 125+tax+programming(lol).

I just bought a new one from Amazon for 11 bucks. Now that I know the problem, the new one should program without a problem. Thanks for the responses and concerns. I can tell this is the forum is for people who actually care. Thanks again.

That's good to hear! Did they charge you anything for diagnostics, or did you basically decline their service and run like hell hahaha.

Occam's Razor in action. :yesnod

I'd have never even considered that the fob was bad since it worked (with bad range) before the battery change.

Thanks! Yeah it still confuses me too but the proof is there. Maybe it was just hanging on by a thread as it was and any sort of tinkering pushed it over the edge. It was a pretty worn out key fob judging by how there was no markings left on the rubber buttons.

Damn right I did lol. No charge for diagnostic. Or at least I didn't stick around long enough for one haha.
