Post

Hey fellas.. This is my first post, so allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jc, and I have been a Z enthusiast for over 10 years.

I recently purchased my first Z, a 1974 260Z, and am already having a lot of issues. I believe that I need to replace the Ignition Module, but I'd prefer a cheaper and more reliable route than the OEM. I'd read that the GM HEI would be a good replacement. What I really need to know is, where can I buy a complete conversion kit? Or if there are none available, what all would need to be replaced, other than the obvious Distributor and Ignition Module? Also, are there any step-by-step online manuals for the conversion?

Feel free to leave links for anything that seems relevant.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Be sure to download the Factory Service Manual for your Z. You can get it right here at nicoclub.com/datsun-service-manuals .

I'm sure there are a number of options for replacement electronic ignitions. Most folks in this part of the country use the Pertronix solid state ignition system as a replacement for their "points type" ignition in early Z's. Same thing will apply to your 260Z - you can use an after-market SS ignition module to replace your factory ignition.

Have you checked the wiring and connectors on the ignition module and distributor components? The factory modules are pretty robust - you rarely hear of one actually failing. But too, you never know what happens to these old Z's... You might take a look at the FSM and check the distributor internals before you buy another ignition.

I'd recommend the pertronix conversion or similar. cheap available dependable aftermarket.

I've used Pertonix on a couple vehicles with good results. The Crane optical has been good to me too. Currently, I have an MSD "streetfire" unit. So far, so good. I believe the Crane has been my favorite so far.

I've tried the GM HEI but ran into issues at High RPM on the track.

SakuraChuck is correct, look at the FSM. Knowledge is always good.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.
Pertronix was recommended on another site, as well.

Information needed now:

Is the Pertronix a distributor or ignition module? If it's an ignition module, will it work with the OEM distributor? If it does not work with the OEM distributor, what kind of distributor do I need?

IT replaces the points in your stock distributor. Once you have this, you can use the ignition modules described earlier.

Or, in your case, (since the stock 260Z has electronic ignition already) it can replace the stock electronics in your distributor. You'll replace the stock pick-up components (reluctor and pick-up coil(s)) inside the distributor with the Pertronics parts.

In the 1974 260Z FSM you'll find distributor & electronics information in the "Engine Electrical" section, page 33 (EE33). That'll describe what you should have - keep in mind changes could have been made over the years however.
