Need help with code1440.

I need help with code 1440, my buddy has a 1998 200 sx and is having this code come up and we have searched and cannot find a leak. I found a port today that says evap port system check. It says one #max pressure and I am not sure what thismeans, do I put pressure on this line to check for leaks or what. Also he has a very large exhaust leak and I am wondering if this could be throwing a bad code. When he starts the car it smells like paint thinner like it is running rich. This is the only code that is coming up. His brake and battery light are on and sometimes they flash and when they do his headlights flash, does this have anything to do with his problem? The car has over 200000 miles on it I am trying to help him, sorry this is so long,thank you.
