Hello my name is James and i just bought a Nissan 240sx for about $1,500. I was just curious because im a "newbie" at custom cars, but how would I go about making my car faster. I just wanted to get advice to what parts I should look into purchasing to be competative in legal street racing. Thanks you and sorry if this is in the wrong thread.

I suggest starting with basic intake and exhaust. As far as an intake goes, $30-$50 on ebay. An intake is an intake. Theres no point in spending the money on a brandname. As far as cat-back exhaust i recommend the apexi N1. The N1 was the first thing i upgraded on my 93 hatch and i am very pleased with it. Fairly loud with a nice deep tone. plus, its big enough for a turbo when the time comes. Will run about 550 to 600 bucks (pricey but worth it!). To fully open up exhaust a set of headers is a must. Not too sure which brand to go with tho. Check the FAQ. Its a direct bolt-on, very easy to install. Once again these are the fundamentals. The engine will breath much easier with a noticeable hp gain. But u will really start feeling the effects once other upgrades are installed. To get more hp, i recommend camshafts and ecu. These will completely change the way your engine acts and really up the hp. At this point an aftermarket clutch is a must. This will get more of that power to the ground and quicker launches off the line. I just installed a centerforce dual-friction, but have not been able to test yet. While u have the transmission out u might as well install a lightweight flywheel. Fidanza makes one for 240's(it weighs 1/2 as much as the stock one). As far as shift linkage goes, B&M makes a quality short shifter. This makes shifting a lot quicker. The less time spent out of gear the better.

The best thing you can do is research. You can find out anything you need to know in this forum, and if you can't find it then make a post and I bet you someone will be able to answer you.

Now you should decide what you want to do with your car and come up with a plan. Based on other people's experience with different combinations of parts put together the setup you think you will be happy with. Don't be like me - when I got my s13 I thought I would rather have a nice looking car than a fast one, so I spent about $4,000 on body work. Now looking back I see I could have a damn fast car for 4 grand, and Im finally getting around to building a KA.

The FAQ section will answer a lot of questions you have: http://240sx.org/faq/

Have fun.
