Need help with bizarre electrical problem!

I have a '97 J30 with an electrical problem. The wipers, radio, and a/c stopped working, and at the same time. I could still drive my car, but when I reached my destination and shifted the car into park, the automatic transmission made a grinding noise. When I restarted the car, all of these problems simulataneously resolved. This has happened twice now--once while it was raining. Any ideas? I'm wondering if it is a faulty relay that serves the wipers, radio, a/c, and transmisson?

It has happened twice, total--once yesterday on a sunny day and once a month ago in the rain.

Hmm that almsot sounds like a main connection is flaky..... Its hard to diagnose things like this over the internet...

have you begun diagnosis anywhere?

I took it to a local mechanic today, but since the car was running fine, and there were error codes when he plugged his hand-held computer until the diagnostics under the dash, he suggested I check the internet forums. I could take it to the dealer, but they are very expensive.

i know this is a old thread but im new, i just bought a 93 j30t, and this happened to me yesterday, it was doing the weird grinding only in park and stoped when i shifted it out of park, and my accesories werent working, the heater fan wasnt blowing my ciggerette plug in wasnt working, not sure if the cd player was working i bought it with no face on the deck, but this guys symptoms seem exactly on with what was up with my car. ya i just picked up my car on monday, im sick right now or id be at work, and then heading outside to work on the car, but ive been ****ting like a mad man the last 24 hours and its also below freezing outside right now. besides the grinding in first the transmission works fine, is it a bad sensor?should i do a transmission flush? where should i start infinity guru's?

edit: ok so its 3 now and i took the car out to put some fresh gas in it, the guy i bought it from said the gas was about 2 years old in it. so i just drained it and put some premium in it, i think it was getting some knock in it before and it feels alot more responsive now. but to the problem, when i first went out and started it, it was fine just like yesterday. but after i gassed it up and started it back up it made that weird clunking sound. and THEN lol when i put it and parked and turned it off the motor didnt want to die and it was making not quite a squeeling sound but more like a fast er er er er er er sound between. its wierd. hoping its not something not internally wrong with the transmission

oh and i had another question i thought i would just add to this thread instead of to another one, the hicus light is on does that mean theres a problem with it and it will not be working? that is my guess but, then again i wasnt sure if there was a on and off button somewhere for the all wheel steering. first car with this option. im guessing its just not working lol

The hicas light can be something as simple as low power steering fluid. Thats what mine was.

thanks i havent actually checked that, i did forget to add though i checked the trannmission dip stick, and it appeared to be fresh atf not brown or to old, someone did replaced the fluid sometime soon.

just a update, seems to be worse in warmer weather, 40-50degrees when its colder it will hardly ever do it. the last couple days it did get worse, it started doing it in first gear, but shifts find still, i checked all the fuses and under hood fuses, im not sure where else to look, and its getting colder and without a shop i really dont feel like messing with this ****. any sensors i should look at or clean? any insight at where to look or start at would be nice.
