and more specifically the question of do certain brands of gasoline (citgo, exxon, QT, BP, etc) have different quality of performance if using the same octane? Or in a more intelligible manner - Does 93 octane gas from QT, BP, exxon, etc have a different level of quality than 93 octane gas as compared to the other gas stations?

Quality being defined as keeps engine running smooth, has more or less residual deposits, gunks up fuel injectors, etc.

Thanks in advance for your input. I was hoping to find some sort of review on consumer reports, but to no avail.

The Top Tier gas site referenced in the thread that G_Whizz posted has a list of the retailers that they have identified as meeting their quality standards.

The url is: http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html in case you want to read who they are and what their testing standards are.

The list of Top Tier approved retailers:TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Retailers

Gasoline retailers must meet the high TOP TIER standards with all grades of gasoline to be approved by the automakers as providing TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline.

In addition, all gasoline outlets carrying the brand of the approved retailer must meet the TOP TIER standards.

Additional gasoline retailers are added to the TOP TIER list as they meet the standards. The retailers known to be on the TOP TIER list are shown below.

Only if the gas retailer asks/requests to have its gas certified. Notice the absence of Mobil from the list. Mobil has never requested its gas or retailers be approved or qualified.

My thought as well. Curiously absent is BP/Amoco too.

The conversation I was having yesterday stemmed from somebody telling me they would never use QT gas, even 93 octane, because they heard it gunked up your FIs more than anybody else's and that they only use BP/Amoco. I found it interesting that I had always been told the exact opposite and that BP's gas was not all that great quality wise.

There are lots of knowledgeable people on this forum so if any additional information on the subject is out there I'd appreciate learning about it.

Thanks again!

problem is you really never know for sure what you are getting when you pull up to the pump. case in point...wasn't long ago that i was supposedly putting high octane in my car at a local shell station. turns out it was a mixture of gas and diesel!! the G didn't much care for the diesel although i'm sure the top-end was well lubricated ...

In my experience, I have had the best results from Chevron with Techron in my G... I've also had pretty good luck with Shell in the past. If you live in a VERY hot city like phoenix, you must be consious of filling your tank in the evening or early in the morning. Our temperatures here SOAR well above 115 degrees on a regular basis so this results in increased temperatures of the fuel... well, fuel expands like all gases do and therefore you don't get as much fuel as you think you are getting. The department of weights & Mesures has done a study regarding this and shown that there is a big difference in "noontime gas vs. evening gas...

On a side note (and please pardon my soapbox here) please do NOT purchase fuel from Citgo... This oil company is owned by the current president of Venezuela Hugo Chavez. Mr. Chavez is a hate mongering dictator that has been very outspoken about his hatred of the United States and particularly our current administration. He has gone as far as making threatening statements towards the U.S and is in my opinion a very huge threat to our democracy. Please do not give him the pleasure or the finances to continue his anti-US movement by buying his terror supporting gasoline.

Sorry to be political, but I'm against all this man stands for!

What octane do you guys run? Is it really necessary to run the premium? I heard that it doesn't make the difference if you do.

96 here...I've never put skunk gas in the G, but I have had octane level experience with my bike (03 Honda Interceptor). She HATED high octane! Wouldn't run right...got horrible gas mileage...switched to 89, night and day! The manual did say to use regular...weird

I don't believe Joe actually buys 96 Octane... He wasn't even sure if it was 93 or 96 octane... Been driving for many years and NEVER seen 96... I think he was just Poking at me with the CITGO comment I made... Won't find 96 Octane... TOO HIGH for Govt Emission Standards...

They have 93 in town here I live in south Carolina...born and raised in Marin County though. I put 93 or 91 and every month or so throw a little octane booster/cleaner in there. My G runs as good or better than new with the breather, good gas, better tires, and better oil. I'm about to get some exhaust but I have never seen a sedan with exhaust in person so I don't know which ones sound good
