I recently replaced a head gasket in my truck and the timing chain won't reach the cam sprocket so i now need to open the timing cover.

I can't get the crankshaft pulley bolt loose. As the FSM describes i put the car in 5th gear but the crankshaft pulley moves freely and i'm afraid of breaking
a valve stem if i try and put too much pressure on the bolt. and there are no holes in the front to wedge a screw driver etc to hold the wheel
steady. How do i hold the pulley still while i loosen the bolt?

Any Suggestions on how to keep the crankshaft wheel from moving while getting the bolt off?

Thanks

Take the cam gear off, put the chain on the cam gear then reinstall the cam gear. Make sure you keep tension on the chain so you don't lose the correct teeth position at the crank. Make a wedge to stick inside the timing cover that keeps the chain taught.

Sounds like you did not wedge the chain and the tensioner fell out causing the lack of slack in the chain. If the tensioner has not completely fallen out, you can take a long pry bar and work it back in from the chain side. If that does not work, then a good impact will loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.

I did wedge the chain but it sat for a year before i got back to it so i'm guessing something slipped. I recently purchases a impact wrench
and will try that tomorrow. Thanks bluedog!
