First, let me say that I've been though the search engine and tried everything that I could find with no success.

The connection coming from the ECU broke off and the wires are too short for me to reconnect it.

So, I now have two exposed wires. One white and one black. I believe the white is positive and the black is negative?

I tried wiring the sensor in several ways: (the wiring harness has two wires connected to it)

1. one side of the sub harness to the white, the other side to the black
2. one side to the white, the other side to the negative of the battery
3. one side to the white, the other side to the black and the negative of the battery

Also, I read that you should use shielded wires, is it ok to use un-shielded wires if I wrap them with shielding tape?

So far I haven't had any success. Any help would be appreciated

Also, how long can you bypass the knock sensor without doing significant damage?

There are 2 wires. One shielding wire that eventually gets grounded though the harness. Its not necessary but without it, any outside sources of voltage can affect your signal wire.
The other wire is the signal wire. The knock sensor creates its own voltage signal from specific sound waves which is why there aren't a power or ground. If continuity exists from ecu all the way to knock sensor, most likely the problem is the sensor itself. If the sensor is good and detects knock it will not throw a code, it will just do its job and retard timing.
