need help w/ my check engine light! plz help.

ok so its time to smog my car, i've faild TWICE! the first time was hella gay. he faild me becuz of my gas cap. i was mad but oh well. i got new gas cap, but for a while now (couple months) the check engine light comes on every so often. of course i'm not gonna pass smog w/ that on. so i've done a basic tune up (oil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor) and it turned off for a while. my dad took it to smog it, it was fine. they put it up to test it....BAM it turned on again. as soon as he gets back on the freeway to come home...BAM it turns off. everything under the hood is stock. this is making me s0o dam mad becuz it passes ever other test. all emissions, EVERYTHING, except ECS MIL (engine light). ne suggestions on why the hell my car does this?

like i said, it passed everything w/ flying colors. runs perfect, just that dam light turns on and off when ever it wants. especially when it matters most. ne help is GREATLY appriciated.

Run a ECU test and see what codes pop up.

i don't know NETHING about ecu's. i don't even know how to get started on a test. and once i start the test, i don't know where to find the codes.

ok thanx...well i just tested it and i got 55. according to the codes it says "no malfunction". so i don't know wut the hell to do. it works properly, light turns on when key is in the on position, than off when engine is on. i just don't wanna spend more money on damn smog tests. thanx for you help [s3], nething else i should check?

Try resetting the ECM by unpluggin your battery for about 30 minutes.

Go see what happens after that.

The only reason I can think of that the MIL light goes on and off is when its in the O2 diagnostic mode.

How it got there, I wouldn't know.

...of course, you could just yank the check engine light bulb from the cluster... I've done that myself to pass emissions. :devil

dam your lucky. the two places i've been to, they've said that it has to turn on, and then off when the engine is running.

but the light is off now, so i guess i'm gonna get an O2 sensor, and pray that the damn light won't turn back on when i take it to be tested again.

Or just wire it to the the oil light or something. That way it turns on when the key is just on, but shuts off once the car is running.
