i have done everything to try to drop the bass from getting to the mids all around.

the headunit i have has the output that can be setup for sub or just out.

at about 18 on my unit i can hear distortion sneaking in. what i would like to do is set up the output for sub and make the wire style output go to the amp for mids. is there a wire that goes from the speaker style to rca? or can i ghetto rigg one? i just want it to sound good. the wires are going to be tucked away anyways so any ideas are ok.

thanks for reading

Due to incorrect terminology, improper grammar, and a lack of capitalization, I'm having a hard time decyphering your post.

Let's see if I can rephrase it...

I've tried reducing the bass boost within the headunit, yet I still hear distortion from my speakers at some erroneous volume level. I've thought about using an amp to allieviate the stress on my headunit, but I only have one set of pre-amp outputs, which has a selectable lowpass crossover that can be by-passed.

What I'd like to do is add a subwoofer, then use the line level outputs of the headunit to power an external amp with only RCA inputs. How can I make this work?

Is that pretty close?

If so, hook up the sub amp as usual using the pre-amp outs on your HU. The amp for your mains, however, will need a line level to RCA converter, much like this. What that does is drop the voltage to an appropriate level for the amp, otherwise at some erroneous volume level like 8, you could be sending a strong enough signal to your amp to clip it...which means bye bye speakers.

Also, I tell this to everyone. The greatest source of distortion comes from your speakers, not your amp. If, however, you're driving your amp into clipping, distortion will skyrocket! There are also various harmonics of distortion. The lower order, even harmonics, can at times even sound plesant, within moderation. Upper level harmonics, H6+ will always sound bad and will be audible at much lower levels of distortion, possibly even below 0.1%. On the flip side, it may take as much as 10-15% distortion for an H2 to be audible. Some blind tests I've seen, even had people reporting no audible H2 distortion even at 20-25%. But that's enough out of me.

Sounds to me like you need an amp with a highpass crossover built in to drive your factory speaker locations.

Why not? Are you using 2 channels for bass and 2 channels for one pair of mid/highs?Most amps can run 2 ohm stereo and it will sound better than running the speakers on the deck. The LOC is taking an amplified and distorted signal from your radio and lowering the level so you can run it into the amp and amplify and distort the signal.

I would use the JL Audio CL-RLC which would use the RCA out on your deck and give you 2 pair of RCA outputs WITH a 4V line driver and sub woofer volume control. Then hook your 2 pair of speakers to half the 4ch amp and be done.
