I know this isn't a RB engine, but I'm working on it and I'm lost to what it might be wrong with it. It's a '98 GSX with a built engine. I just got it running and then I saw that it was shooting water out the tail pipe. So, I pulled the #1 plug and found that water is being pumped into it. I thought it was the head-gasket until I looked at the cylinder wall. . . . has anyone seen something like this before? I've been builing engines ofr years and haven't seen anything like this. . . . a friend said it might have been a cracked sleeve and whoever tried to fix it.

Thanks,Jeramy

Get a boroscope and see what the cylinder walls look like, or just pull the head...either way you gotta fix it so I would just pull the head and be done with it.

Might be head gasket or a cracked block...whatever it is, it really sucks.

if its a block get a 6 bolt... otherwise I can pull those engines apart and the ONLY gasket I need is the headgasket.

Keep both manifolds on it (detaching the exhaust mani. from the turbo), keep the thermostat housing on it, just detach at the tube. Take off all the wiring (CAS, injectors, idle air, TPS, throttle closed, ignitor, coils). Take off the upper intercooler pipe keeping the throttle body elbow. Detach all the vac. lines going to the head (I think FPR, the 4 on the TB, one to the BOV, mabye more).

Depress the timing belt tensioner to put slack on the timing belt, and slide the timing belt off the cam gears. Pull the valve cover off (just pull the spark plug wires off and leave them connceted to the coil). Now pull the... (If my memory serves me right), 10 head BOLTS (or studs if using ARP).

Get a friend, one of you grab the head by the cam gears and other person by the back of the intake manifold and thermostat housing (i.e. one person on the left side of the car, one on the right), and pull the head off.

ONLY gasket exposed will be the head gasket. If its a bad headgasket replace it with a new one... the METAL 4-layer Ralli-ART one only costs like $90:http://www.partznet.com/mitsubishihomepage.html

If it needs a block get a 6-bolt (90-92 talon/eclipse/laser/galantvr4) block and swap it in. That way you have the strongest block and the car will never crankwalk.

*cough*check out the screen name*cough*

Ok, a friend bought a built short block, turbo, FMIC and 3" E. So, I told him I'll put it together for him. I used stock gaskets. When you see the pic, you'll see what I'm talking about. . .

hmm... that is kinda weird.. Definately looks like water was getting in there, and even the original OEM mitsu gasket is pretty damn good. (assuming by "Stock" you meant mitsubishi).

I hate sayin this, but maybe pull the block and have it magnafluxed or something.

honestly it looks a little weird... but Its hard to tell from the picture...If your buddy got the block off the trader (i.e. dsmtrader or partstrader) then I wouldn't be suprised if someone scammed him... unfortunately it happens all the time :(

Is there a way to pressure check a block?

Well, it seemed to be the factory head gasket. The car pulls GREAT! More later. . . .
