hey guys, i was just installing new spark plugs today. i bought some ngk iridium ones. the stock ones were ngk as well, but they were the copper ones. i didnt know this. while getting my spark plugs installed, i saw some oil in cylinder # 5. I was expecting this, and i have 3k left before powertrain warranty is over. after i installed the iridiums, i noticed very loud misfire coming from my car. it sounded like loud explosions. freaked me out, so i told my installer to put back the copper ones. after all of this, there was still engine misfire. do you guys think the leaking valve cover is contributing this? please let me know your thoughts. my car is sitting at the dealership, and dont know what to expect.

What was the reason that made you decide to change spark plugs?

They should be good for 100k miles

On previous vehicles I discovered that over time (years) valve cover bolts can loosen due to engine vibration. Putting a socket wrench to each one to check that they are all tight may be a source of a slight oil leak?

I disagree on both. I think the way Telco drives his car that his plugs might last til 100K, but not the way you drive.

Also, the valve covers on the G are designed without replaceable gaskets for the plugs. This is the problem area. I just got some new ones that I'm gonna install soon.

The misfire problem you are getting might be due to a bad coil. Since they were working fine before, I doubt that is it though. I would bet that one of the electric connections to the coil wasn't connected.

Valve cover problems will not make for back fire like you described. What did he set the spark plug gaps to?

I installed the iridium NGK's about 15K miles ago and I had oil in my #3 and #6....no problems with it.

I might replace some of the ignition coils when I do the valve covers though.

well i decided to change my spark plugs because many people were complaining about leaking valve covers. I only had 3k left of powertrain warranty so i just wanted to find out if i had the problem as well.

damn i see. im thinking it could be a wire to the coil, which might not be corrected properly. Well if i found out that one of the wires were missing, should i tell the mechanic to pay for it, cause it wasnt my fault.

I'm assuming the mechanic that changed your plugs was not at an Infiniti dealer? If you paid by credit card (never pay any other way) you can now go to an Infiniti dealer to have them fix the problem. If the plug wires were replaced incorrectly or the wrong plugs were installed then have them write that up clearly on the bill. Pay them by credit card. Then call and write a letter to the credit card company along with a copy of the Infiniti bill and ask that they issue a charge back and to credit your account for the amount you paid the first mechanic.State in the letter the work performed was perfunctory and in an unworkman like manner.

Did a little thinking on this...

I'm thinking coils or coil wires. Kind of weird that the problem just manifested once Eric pulled everything apart. I watched him and I didn't see any major issues. Other than the spark plugs, the only thing he could have fubarred was the intake (vacuum or volume) and both of those should have set off a code.

hey man, yea the dealer called me yesterday, and they told me they guy who changed my spark plugs mixed up the coil packs from cylinder #4 and # 6. thts the only reason the engine misfired. the good thing is the mechanic took responsibility and helped me out. The dealership will not fix the leaking valve covers under warranty tho. they were like my car is too modified and they wont fix it.

thats so whack!

what does anything you have done to your car have to do with faulty valve covers?

a$$. it should be a recall since everyone experiences that.

I bet if you take your car to Riverside Infiniti they will fix it, no problem. You don't have anything on there that affects the valve covers and this is a COMMON problem. Riverside has dealt with this problem a lot and they sell a lot of aftermarket stuff too.

I wouldn't. I would call first, verify. Then take it in. They shouldn't have any problems.

What dealership did you take it to before?
