Well fellas, I've just finish installing Sr T25 on my lil CA. and wow!! what a blast!! well and since I havn't done any timing on my CA since I got it..I done 1 last night..and it was @10degree in stead of 15 where it suppost to be. so I turn the CAS to the 15 degree mark ( 2nd mark from the right) what I notice is that the CAS is almost to the end on the advance side....is this normal??? hmm help me out. C PS: @ what degree u set urs on for our crappy 93 octane?? C

thats the same as where mine is, its maybe 1mm space from outside of bolt to the end of adjustment (i.e. the space you can see)..

Ok boys, there is two reasons for that.

1) your timing belt is off by a tooth or two.2) The crank pulley itself has some kind of rubber dampner between the inner part that bolts onto the crank and the part where the belts go on, this rubber in between tends to break a bit and the outer pulley (belt one) turns a bit which ends up giving you the wrong timing. (That is from experience as it happened to me).

find out if your timing is good, then see if you can get another pulley.

If the timing belt is good, The 10mm bolt that holds the CAS to the CAS cover should have equal space on both sides which this will put you at 15 Degrees. The best timing I find is to set it at 18 Degrees. I feel at 18 Degrees the car comes more to life.

Good luck,

Hrm, maybe it's the crank being off as you describe..

I'm absolutely certain the timing belt is correctly installed, we painstakingly aligned everything.

it did seem to run better more towards the center but thats not what my timing light told me was correct from the crank..

Hi nocwage,

I suggest to check your fsm again man, Visit Page EF&EC-22 , it does mention to have your timing at 15 degrees +-2 degrees B.T.D.C, I have been working with these engines since 1995 and thats what I have been setting the timing at and and they run much better at 18Degrees and thats from experience.

If you do set your timing at 10 degrees you will definitely hear your valves knocking.

ignition timing won't cause valves to hit anything, just having the belt off a tooth or several..

No No, I didn't mean the valves will hit, but they will knock due to retarding the timing. You will hear the valves ticking when your retard the timing alot.

just out of curiousty, and i'm not trying to be an *** by any means, how exactly are you setting your timing? like what are you connecting the timing light to, what's the whole setup?

To set the timing, remove the coil from cylinder #1, remove the red rubber of the coil, get your self a regular spark plug wire (NIssan SR20de, or honda civic wire will work fine), plug one end of the wire into the coil and tape it sold to it so it won't come out, the other end plug it into the spark plug. Then you can hook your timing gun onto the spark plug wire and set your timing.

I'll have to steal a buddy's timing light and just check my Silvia KIt came straight from Japan and I haven't touched the timing on it.

And just FYI, the correct way to check timing is all listed out in the FAQ in the sticky in the top of the forum....

When I was using a timing light I followed the FSM instructinos for haxing up an ign wire to fit into the coil boot (don't ask, if you don't know what I mean look in the FSM).

This morning I unbolted the CAS and moved it about center, started the car and fooled with it.. its a tad CCW of center ATM but only a little, seemed to idle better there.. when I was tightening it down one of the CAS bolts snapped the head off.. thats the 2nd or 3rd POS bolt to snap on this engine, and its not like I was mad torquing it, just old crappy hardware..

so right now its got 2 bolts on it, tonight I'll dig through my other parts to find the bolts from the other CAS and replace that later..

Although, I'd rather the bolt break than the bolt break the threads in the head.

Anyhow, its got quite a bit more pep now but not as good as when I was first running it.. I'll probably let the ECU reset overnight and see if that helps since it hasn't been reset since it was overheating / etc.

We should start a thread or sometihng to indicate the bolt sizes/threads etc for the various partsI'd like to go buy some new ones and just start replacing ones I take out that look "suspect".

I was planning to do that eventually, when I bagged all the parts disassembling my motors I labelled each bag w/ the socket size(s) for them along w/ what they went to.. I suppose I can measure their length/thread etc too if I ever get around to it.

Ok chief, i've seen where other members feel that timing the engine to 18 degrees is best if you're running 93' octane, and you've disagreed.

Well i live in jamaica, and we only have 87' and 90' octane down here, so should i still follow your suggestion and time to 18 degrees or just 15 degrees???

droopy_map, I don't recomend to use 87 octane, if the highest you have is 90 octane stick with it and keep your timing at 15 degrees.
