I have finally grown tire of listening to just the radio since my 6 disc changer kicked the bucket 3 years ago. Enough is enough. I am not interested in changing any of the speakers, just adding a new head unit. I think I know all the required items to make this happen except for one thing I cant' figure out. Will this new unit work with the rear vhs entertainment system that came with the 01 qx4. I have the aux. switch beside the gear shifter that allows it to be played over the speaker system. I can't find any info on the net how to get around it and the guy at Crutchfield was stumped as well. I am new to any kind of radio installation and any ideas or suggestions will help tremendously. Sorry for the long post. Thanks!

First off, welcome (again) to NiCO and congrats on your first post.

We have a few autoaudiophiles that lurk around here, so I'll see if one of them can rustle up an answer to your question. Give me a few minutes.

Interesting question. Let me see if I can dig something up in the service manual. So you've got a VHS player in the vehicle somewhere that will output video to rear monitor(s)? And the audio can be piped through the rear speakers? Does the VHS audio go through the front speakers too? I have a somewhat similar setup in my truck, and will be tackling the same project soon.

Thanks all for the welcome. Yes, it is the VHS system that came from the factory and it works through all the stock speakers when you switch on the aux button next to the gear shifter. I do not want to mess that up since I have a 6 year riding in the back. However I need to replace the 6 disc changer and get my discs out of it. Most aftermarket stereos do not have a fitting for the aux wire that is connected to the vhs system. So I am kind of stuck unless someone knows of a better way to change out the stock head unit but keep my sound for the vhs system.

First, sorry for all of the questions. I'm having a tough time digging through the service manual for your vehicle to find the answers.

So it is an aux input that runs through ALL the speakers when connected. As in, you can't listen to the radio/cd/whatever in front when there is a movie playing in the back? You can actually see the wire that connects from the VHS for the audio (could you feasibly plug an iPod or something in there instead)? And the aux button is near the shifter and NOT on the audio unit itself?

If this is what I'm thinking, I may have some very good news for you. Fingers crossed.

I can control the volume of the vhs movie being played through the head unit when the aux button is switched to on. The switch is located beside the heat seat switches in front of the gear shifter. I have heard there is an 8 din plug that connects the vhs to the head unit. There is an audio/video out on the vhs that I currently have a dvd player running through. I just would like a new head unit without losing the sound of the entertainment system over my stock speakers. The way the aux switch is wired through the stock speakers and head unit I have to listen to one(cd,movie) or the other.

Why keep the vhs? Get a double din head unit that you can play dvds. I have one of the Pioneer head units for single dvds and a six dvd changer in the rear for road trips. Works great, all sound from the stock speakers.
