I bought my 96 240sx back in 05 and I started to have bad fumes coming through the dash air ducks i thought it was c monoxide fumes but had a friend take a look and he said it was''nt that im starting to get irredable with this car and don't want to take it to a mechanic just so that he can take advantage of my shortcomming's in my car, it does'nt smell like exhaust fumes it's somehtin else , I let the car sit for a week then took it to the car wash and pressure washed the entire engine including the undercarriage ( i thought it may have been the old dried up oil that was on the engine portion ) the smell seemed to go away till I got on the freeway then punched it , the smell is starting to make me drowsy and kinda makes my heart jump it's something serious and I'd like it to go away , if anybody could recommend some info it would be very appreciative , thanks for lookin.

you got junk in the air ducts or where it takes air in from just under the hood in front of the windshield. Clean that place out.

This may not be related but in my car I had a problem with fumes in the cabin ... it turned out to be coming from the transmission ... I replaced the rubber boot that goes around the shifter (undernieth the plasic cover and leather shift boot) and when I took it off noticed that the rubber housing around the shifter undernieth was shot so I replaced it at the same time ... the problem was greatly reduced .... an easy test is to open you sunroof and take of the cover over the shifter and see if you see any smoke ... that is how I found mine ... on accident.

gear oil is a pretty noticable stench. you can tell if it's gear oil since it stinks like corroded sweaty toes yuck.
